Royals Fans Break into KU's Stadium, Tear Down Goal Post After World Series Win

Kyle NewportJun 8, 2018

Tearing down the goal posts is a common practice (if security can't stop it) after a home underdog upsets a highly ranked team in college football.

After a World Series win? Not so much. However, it happened Sunday night in Kansas.

The Kansas City Royals ended a 30-year championship drought by defeating the New York Mets in five games in the 2015 World Series. After the Royals pulled out a 7-2 victory in Game 5, Kansas City partied like it was 1985.

The championship celebration wasn't limited to Kansas City, though. The folks at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, got rowdy as well.

Wanting to celebrate in grand fashion, fans broke into the Jayhawks' Memorial Stadium, tore down one of the goal posts and threw it in a lake:

With the Jayhawks football team sitting at 0-8 and getting blown out left and right, Kansas fans were probably just looking for an excuse to tear down the goal posts.

According to Scott Chasen of the University Daily Kansan, the football stadium sustained approximately $10,000 in damages during the celebration.
