Could Stefon Diggs Be This Year's Odell Beckham Jr.?
The Minnesota Vikings got a big win over the rival Detroit Lions Sunday thanks in large part to a prolific offensive performance.
The usual suspects—Adrian Peterson and Teddy Bridgewater—had big games, but lost in the midst of all that is the impressive showing on the part of Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
The rookie wideout hauled in six of nine targets for 108 yards and a touchdown, and he continued his assault on opposing defenses.
It hasn't always been that simple, though.
Diggs was selected in the fifth round (146th overall by the Vikings) in the 2015 NFL draft. In his 6'0", 190-pound frame, the Vikings saw something that 31 other teams didn't: a budding star.
Diggs was an underrated talent coming out of the University of Maryland. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller ranked the 21-year-old as the 36th-best receiver available, and ESPN had him ranked 21st at his position.
Since the draft, Diggs has been on an absolute tear.
| 4 | @Denver | 10 | 6 | 87 | 14.5 | 25 | 0 |
| 5 | Bye | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- |
| 6 | Kansas City | 9 | 7 | 129 | 18.4 | 31 | 0 |
| 7 | @Detroit | 9 | 6 | 108 | 18.0 | 36 | 1 |
Diggs' NFL debut was solid, as he threw up 87 yards on just six catches. The young receiver followed that up, though, with a 100-plus yard effort in Week 6—a gaudy six-catch, 108-yard performance, including his first career touchdown.
With plays like that and weeks like these, Diggs is starting to look more and more like this year's breakout rookie (a la Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014).
Sure, it's only three weeks, but through those three weeks, Diggs is well ahead of the pace set by Beckham Jr. in his first three professional games.
| Stefon Diggs | 6 REC, 10 TGTS, 87 YDS, 0 TD | 7 REC, 9 TGTS, 129 YDS, 0 TD | 6 REC, 9 TGTS, 108 YDS, 1 TD | 19 REC, 28 TGTS, 324 YDS, 1 TD |
| Odell Beckham Jr | 4 REC, 5 TGTS, 44 YDS, 1 TD | 2 REC, 4 TGTS, 28 YDS, 0 TD | 4 REC, 6 TGTS, 34 YDS, 2 TD | 10 REC, 15 TGTS, 106 YDS, 3 TD |
Diggs beat Beckham Jr. in receptions, targets and receiving yards through their first three games and trailed the second-year wideout in touchdowns (3-1 in favor of Beckham Jr.).
It's not just the production on the field, though, as Beckham Jr. and Diggs compare well physically, too. According to NFL.com, Beckham Jr. is listed at 5'11", 198 pounds. As noted above, Diggs possesses a 6'0", 190-pound frame of his own, making the two similar in terms of physical measurements.
Even some of their combine numbers are remarkably similar:
| Stefon Diggs | 4.46 seconds | 115" | 35" | 10" | 31 1/4" |
| Odell Beckham Jr | 4.43 seconds | 122" | 38.5" | 10" | 32 3/4" |
Beckham and Diggs have obvious physical similarities, and their affinity for making highlight-reel catches certainly makes for some interesting points of comparison. However, his teammate, Mike Wallace, has a bigger comparison in mind, according to Matt Vensel of the Star Tribune (h/t NFL.com):
"They have some exceptions where guys get better drastically over time. But for the most part, you can tell from Day One, can he play or can he not play? And I always felt like (Diggs) could from Day One. ... Just the skill set, the way he runs his routes, the energy that he has. It reminds me of (Brown).
"
The comparisons to Antonio Brown may be a bit premature, but the rookie wideout has obviously made a big impression on his new teammate. It probably has something to do with him dusting opponents like this:
If Diggs keeps exploiting corners with routes like that, then the 21-year-old may be able to live up to Wallace's billing. In the meantime, though, the University of Maryland product is making his case to be this year's OBJ.
