I won't waste much time on this so here's my 10 reasons why I like the NFL over the NBA:

My favorite team

Is the Oakland Raiders. Not in the NBA, not in the  MLB, but in the NFL. I treasure the Raiders 10 times more than any other team in the NBA.

Contact

Look at the picture above, what do you see? Watch any Jack Tatum highlights, what do you see? Watch Chauncey Billups shoot a long jumper, what do you see? Answer: contact, contact, and no contact (unless you call swish a contact)!

Strategy

In the NBA every game has this. In the NFL most games have this. So it looks like there's more in the NBA than the NFL, huh? Wrong. From pass near the sidelines to run the ball, I think there's more strategy in football than basketball.

The intentional foul

Boooorrringg...The game over yet? From two minutes left, down by 12, with only three team fouls THE WHOLE GAME, to...a minute left, down by 18, with six team fouls.

Playoff system

Maybe this is just me, but I like single elimination better.

Weather conditions

In the NBA, playing on the road is harder because it's someone else's court. In the NFL, it's usually weather that makes it harder (this only occurs at most stadiums). Waaaaayy more of a challenge.

The fans

This is totally only my observation, but, I have noticed that fans go a little more 'into it' in the NFL than the NBA.

Blocking

This is what I love watching it happen in real football—two men pushing each other to sack or protect the QB.

Don't have to be fast, we allow fats!

Notice in basketball how everyone on the court has to be at least somewhat fast to be a starter. I think we all know that's different in football.

Injuries

This might seem cruel, but just think—wouldn't it be easier in the NFL if no one got injured? J-russ, Bo Jackson, and other athletes who dealt somehow with injury? I know, this is in basketball too, but not as often.

  1. Fun read I enjoyed it I have been thinking of an article about how I can't get into the NHL after discovering the NFL.

    1. Thanks Ivahn,
I can't enjoy hockey after the NFL, too.

  2. i like the NFL over the NBA as well. http://mmafight.ca
at least i can sit down and watch the super bowl, i can't seem to get into basketball at all. maybe it has to do with the league's images.

  3. while i do enjoy both the NFL and the NBA, i do love the NBA much more. in the NBA if their is any slight contact what so ever that's a foul. another thing about the NBA is the flopping. one SLIGHT touch and players throw themselves to the floor. and what's even more shocking is the refs buy it and call it almost every time.

and with all the fouls, the last 30 seconds in the NBA can last almost 5 minutes.

    1. To Smith,
B-ball can drag on, but not as much as football.

  4. im a Raiders and Lakers fan. If the Lakers arent playing i dont care. If the Raiders arent playing, well ill still find a game to watch. if the Lakers werent in playoffs i wouldnt watch, well actually i dont watch any other playoff games in NBA as it is. Whether Raiders are in Playoffs or not i like alot of the playoff games.

Theres nothing like the NFL. and being more strategic is a no brainer. the strategy of football is incredible. in fact even when the strategy was not as complex today as like 20 years ago it still was a 100 times more strategic than basketball. in the NBA one player can change a whole team, see Pao Gasol. even though Kobe is the best player he couldnt do it with some help, Pao completely opened that up. and 2 great players can help your team win a championship in NBA. in NFL you need several good players and more talent, but strategy usually wins.

and in NBA regular season is almost irrelevant, in football every game matters due to so fewer games. the only time the NFL regular season might not matter is a team at the end of season has their playoff spot and rests their players, but thats like 1 or at most 2 games at end of season. but theres still alot of meaningful games.

its a no brainer that NFL is most popular sport by americans. its about like what soccer is to europe or some other countries.

  5. Nice article David. I am a big fan of the Nets and Eagles. It just seems that NFL games are so much more flowing. I can watch any of the 16 games on a given Sunday and find enjoyment. Meanwhile, unless my Nets are on or Kobe, LeBron or D-Wade is playing, I usually pass on the NBA games.

And being at a football game is something else. I was at the Tampa Bay-Philly championship game a couple of years back in negative temperatures supporting my team. The Fans went nuts (in a good and bad way) but the intensity of being at an NFL game is also that much greater.

As a big sports fan, I love both sports and I watch both. But maybe it's that potential to have a big play every single snap that keeps me going.

  6. i would agree with this article, but who cares about the Raiders?
Id rather watch half the teams in the NBA over the Raiders, and I love football way more than basketball. I guess some people have a thing for losers.

    1. That's because your not a RAIDER fan, Bryan.

  7. I agree. NFL over NBA any day of the week. Fun read.

    1. Thanks Andrew!
