'Where Is Roger' Crowd Chant During Patriots-Steelers Sparks Twitter Reaction
During the fourth quarter of the New England Patriots' season-opening 28-21 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Foxborough, Massachusetts, faithful joined in unison to jeer NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who opted not to attend Thursday's contest as a result of the fallout from the Deflategate controversy.
With the Patriots holding a comfortable 28-14 lead, the crowd at Gillette Stadium erupted with a "Where is Roger?" chant:
Notorious Boston sports fan Bill Simmons was quick to join in on the festivities:
SB Nation didn't take long to find the commissioner, though:
Meanwhile, legal analyst Michael McCann noted that Goodell likely wasn't fazed by the reception:
Rotoworld's Patrick Daugherty expressed a similar sentiment:
Elsewhere, Dejan Kovacevic of DKPittsburghSports.com noted that the crowd's decision may not have painted the franchise in the best light:
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Brett Anderson proceeded to chime in with a lighthearted take revolving around a former Boston Red Sox hurler:
According to Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo, a league spokesman reiterated earlier in the week that Goodell didn't want to attend the game because he "believes the focus should be on the game on the field and the festivities celebrating the Patriots' Super Bowl championship."
However, Goodell and the NFL have filed an appeal to overturn the Deflategate ruling that wiped away Tom Brady's four-game suspension.
With the process still ongoing, this undoubtedly won't be the last time Patriots fans have some harsh words for Goodell.
