Jameis Winston to Be Trained on Virtual Reality System Purchased by Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in the process of acquiring a virtual reality system to help train quarterback Jameis Winston, the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
Alex Marvez of Fox Sports reported Friday the team is following the technological lead of the Dallas Cowboys as well as college teams such as Stanford and Clemson. Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter confirmed to Marvez they are eagerly seeking out the right system: "What I tell vendors that come in to show us stuff is that we need it today. Some people tell us, 'This will be ready in three months. I say, 'No, Jameis needs this tomorrow.'"
Winston discussed how he's going through the preparations for his rookie campaign without the benefit of the new style of learning an offense.
"I visualize the concept and go through my reads with no one out there," Winston said. "I haven't done any virtual things. I know the Cowboys have got it."
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller talks about the type of impact Winston can have on the Buccaneers as a rookie next season:
Marvez also passed along comments from Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden, who spoke to the team's website about the opportunity to use virtual reality. He stated the biggest difference is being able to rewind the play while still being able to visualize it, which is unlike talking about a play in practice or watching film.
The Buccaneers haven't won a playoff game since the 2002 season, when they won the Super Bowl. One of the major reasons for that drought is the lack of a franchise quarterback. They hope Winston is able to fill the key void for the next decade or more.
A learning curve exists even from top-end college programs to the NFL because the speed of the game increases. Getting a virtual reality system to help Winston get more looks at the various plays in the Bucs offense could only hasten his development process.
Now, the question is how quickly Tampa Bay can acquire one. Training camp is right around the corner, and Week 1 is less than three months away.
