Shonn Greene Released by Titans: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Mike ChiariJun 16, 2015

After two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, veteran running back Shonn Greene was released on Tuesday, the team announced

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean was the first to report the Titans' intention to part ways with the 29-year-old back.

Greene's status has been somewhat uncertain throughout the offseason as he did not attend the team's voluntary offseason program. According to John Glennon of the Tennessean, Greene was caring for his child instead. Despite Greene's absence, head coach Ken Whisenhunt wasn't particularly concerned: "Obviously we'd like to have him here. But he's a veteran. He knows how to get himself prepared. ... We've communicated with him. But once again, he's a veteran player and this is voluntary. This is not atypical of other teams in the league."

The Titans' decision to release Greene comes at an interesting time since the former Iowa Hawkeye was on the verge of rejoining the team, per Wyatt:

Tennessee struggled mightily running the ball last season as it averaged just over 90 yards per game, which was 26th in the NFL.

Greene rushed for just 392 yards and two touchdowns as he was surpassed on the depth chart by rookie Bishop Sankey. All told, Greene didn't even reach 700 rushing yards during his two seasons combined in Tennessee after crossing the 1,000-yard threshold in both 2011 and 2012 with the New York Jets.

In the opinion of Kuharsky, signing Greene was a major blunder by the Titans front office:

Greene certainly wasn't anything special during his time with the Titans, but his release creates a major depth problem. Sankey figures to be the starter, but behind him are Dexter McCluster, who is more of a gadget player than a true running back, and David Cobb, who was a fifth-round pick this year out of Minnesota.

Tennessee's release of Greene is an indictment of the six-year veteran considering how little it has at the running back position. Greene may find a job elsewhere since he has had success in the NFL before, but after two mediocre seasons and with his 30th birthday coming up fast, he could just as easily be on his last legs.
