Herding the Horns: Who will lead the 2008 Texas Longhorns back to the BCS?

The days of Vince Young have come and gone for Mack Brown and the University of Texas football program. Now, Mack must find someone, something to recreate the magic that this program and its fans have longed for.

If you're looking at the roster for the 2008 Longhorns, you are probably not going to find that one person to fill the giant shoes Vince left to fill. I don't know if anyone will. Ever.

This Longhorn team will be different than what Horn fans are used to. With the departure of Jamaal Charles, the 'Horns lack the offensive weapon that forces their opponents defense to game plan for. But what you will find is a number of roll players that will provide plenty of spark and leadership for the 'Horns to rally around. Here are some names to look out for.

Colt McCoy - McCoy is the heart and soul of this team. He is a very athletic and accurate QB that is going into his fourth year in Greg Davis' system. After a phenomenal freshman season (2,570yrds, 29TD's, 7int.), McCoy had a sub-par season according to Longhorn standards. Even though the Horns lack the offensive weaponry of the past, look for McCoy to shoulder more of the load and for Greg Davis to open up the playbook for his young QB as long as he can keep his interception numbers at a minimum.

Quan Cosby - This one time minor league baseball player has morphed into one of the top receivers in the Big 12 and one of the best return men in the nation. Last season he recorded 60 catches for 680 yards and 5 TD's while retuning 42 kick-offs for 1,017 yards. Cosby has been a leader for the 'Horns since the first day he stepped foot on the 40 acres and this season should be no different. He is McCoy's primary target on offense. Look for a phenomenal season from Cosby as he looks to silence his NFL doubters.

Rashad Bobino-While he may lack the size that NFL scouts look for in a middle linebacker, he plays with the heart of a man twice his size. Bobino's attitude and heart make him a very essential part of this years team. While the Horns adapt to their third defense in four years under the guidance of former Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, look for Bobino to lead this young defense back to national prominence.

Will Muschamp- Muschamp may not play a position on the field, but the new defensive coordinator will play a major role in the success or lack there of for the Longhorns. Infamous for his YouTube video that illustrates his intensity, Muschamp brings the "make the play or sit your @$$ on the bench" attitude that the Horns defense desperately needs. After a dismal defensive season under Duane Akina, Mack Brown went after another Auburn defensive coordinator to turn his defense around. Under Muschamp, players will be expected to perform no matter what their class may be or they will not see the field. Muschamp will find players that want to play and this year's defense, I guarantee, will be very fun to watch for the Longhorn faithful.
