Pittsburgh Steelers: Why Kevin Whimpey Is the Team's Best UDFA Signing

Steve RodenbaughJun 4, 2015

Boasting perhaps the top offensive trio in the NFL in quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back Le'Veon Bell, the Pittsburgh Steelers have more than enough offensive firepower to win the franchise's seventh Super Bowl.

However, as in previous seasons, the Steelers' offensive line continues to be a question mark as inconsistent play and a lack of depth could prove to be insurmountable roadblocks on their road to a championship in 2015.

Having focused almost exclusively on defense in the draft, the Steelers opted to go fishing for offensive line prospects in the undrafted free-agent pool and may have found a keeper in Utah State product Kevin Whimpey.

He will prove to be the best of the team's undrafted free agents.

After converting from the defensive line to the offensive side of the ball in 2011, Whimpey started 40 games at left tackle for the Aggies and was a first-team Mountain West Conference performer in 2014.

One of the strongest players in this year's rookie class, the 6'5", 295-pounder managed 39 bench press reps at his pro day. According to SteelersWire, that's a higher total than any registered at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine. Lucas Campbell of Steelers Depot views him as an old-school mauler who can move people off the line of scrimmage.

Although Steelers Depot's Alex Kozora suggests he is best suited for the guard position and will likely be moved inside, Whimpey could also provide depth at the tackle position if neededespecially under the tutelage of Steelers offensive line coach and Hall of Fame guard Mike Munchak.

With starting left guard Ramon Foster and starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum as well as top reserve tackle Mike Adams all entering the final year of their respective contracts, the Steelers will likely have some holes to fill on their offensive line depth chart and a need for versatile offensive linemen.

Having already changed positions once during his college career, Whimpey should be able to transition to guard and earn a spot on either the 53-man roster or the practice squad.

This would give the Steelers some positional flexibility that they haven't had in recent seasons.

While there's no way to predict how injuries and other position needs will impact the final roster, there's no doubt that offensive linemen with power, experience and versatility are hard to find.

That's why Whimpey is well positioned to earn on a spot with the Black and Gold and prove to be the cream of its free-agent crop.
