San Diego Chargers Mock Draft: Updated Day 2 Predictions
The San Diego Chargers welcomed Melvin Gordon on Day 1, but boy, did it cost them.
The Wisconsin running back was selected 15th overall but not before a trade was made with the San Francisco 49ers to move up two spots from 17. The swap cost San Diego a fourth-round pick this year and a fifth-rounder in 2016.
Down to just four more picks, what will the Chargers do on Day 2 to solidify the roster? Does GM Tom Telesco have another surprise up his sleeve? Read on to find out.
Breakdown of Chargers' Draft Picks After Day 1
1 of 5Here's what San Diego has left heading into Day 2, after the Gordon trade.
Round 2
2 of 5
Pick No. 48: Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon
Wishful thinking says the Chargers will draft an offensive lineman to help open up running lanes for their new addition at running back. There were seven offensive linemen taken in the first round, but Fisher was not one of them.
The blindside protector of Marcus Mariota tested well at the combine and dazzled teams with his athleticism during Oregon's pro day. Fisher is extremely versatile and a perfect fit for a zone-based team like the Chargers. His position could be at right guard in place of lackluster starter Johnnie Troutman.
Round 3
3 of 5
Pick No. 83: Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB, Louisville
Kentucky edge-rusher Bud Dupree was available to the Chargers had they not traded up for Gordon in the first round, but Mauldin will do as a third-round option. His career at Louisville included 20.5 sacks, just three fewer than Dupree, and he has experience at 3-4 outside linebacker and 4-3 defensive end.
The Bolts had the fourth-fewest sacks (26) in 2014, and both of their current starters were injured last season—Melvin Ingram and Jeremiah Attaochu. Mauldin will also help replace the depth lost in the offseason with Dwight Freeney (free agent) and Jarret Johnson (retired) no longer on the squad
Round 5
4 of 5
Pick No. 153: David Parry, NT, Stanford
The loss of the fourth-rounder puts the Chargers in a difficult position, but Telesco has been in this spot before. Parry, a former walk-on at Stanford, posted 34 tackles and five sacks in 2014. His 34 reps on the bench press tied for second at the combine, and his size (6'1", 308 lbs) indicates he may be a fit at nose tackle.
Telesco mentioned last week that he was pleased with the development of 2014 fifth-round pick Ryan Carrethers, but that does little to soften the blow of having the 26th-worst rush defense last season. San Diego needs a player who can hold his own at the line of scrimmage, and Parry may be that guy.
Round 6
5 of 5
Pick No. 192: Devante Davis, WR, UNLV
The Chargers pick up a receiver with their last pick, hoping that he'll someday replace the production of veteran Malcom Floyd. Davis uses his big frame (6'3", 220 lbs) to shield defenders from throws outside and can get up over the top of them to pull down the deep ball.
His greatest asset is the ability to track balls while in mid-air and make adjustments. The Chargers have enough receiver help to cover them in 2015, but Davis will be a valuable addition down the road.
