2015 NFL Mock Draft Round 2: Day 2 Predictions After Round 1 Results

Steve SilvermanApr 30, 2015

Much of the hoopla surrounding the draft is about the top picks and the rest of the first round.

However, NFL scouts and general managers often earn their money by how they do with the rest of the draft. The second round can often be the backbone of any team's draft.

While these players don't have the hype of Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Leonard Williams, Kevin White and Bud Dupree, many of those who will be selected in the second round will have an excellent chance to start this season and become long-time contributors and potential Pro Bowl candidates.

The Titans got their quarterback in Mariota in the first round, and they will open up the second round by getting a stud running back in T.J. Yeldon of Alabama. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt will probably think long and hard about going after Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory, who slipped out of the first round, but Whisenhunt will stay true to his offensive roots by taking a productive runner who averaged 5.7 yards per carry throughout his career with the Crimson Tide.

The Raiders have rarely been known for their drafting acumen in recent years, but if they go with Florida State cornerback Ronald Darby with the third pick in the second round, they will be making an excellent move. Darby has the speed to become a game-breaker and he is already a good cover man. However, he needs to improve his hands, and if he can do that, he will become a star.

Somebody has to swallow hard and take Gregory, and we can’t see him getting past the Saints with the 12th pick in the second round. Gregory appeared to be a top-15 pick just a couple of months ago because he is a top-level pass-rusher who can turn the corner. Sean Payton needs someone who can cause havoc in the backfield and he’s going to get a game-changer in Gregory.

The 49ers are going to be a dramatically different team in 2015, and while not all of their moves have been positive, they can bolster their offensive line if they take Jake Fisher of Oregon with the 14th pick in the second round. Fisher is a technician and he is athletic enough to play left tackle for years. If he can add just a bit of weight and strength to his 6'6", 306-pound frame, he will be an impact player shortly.

The Packers like to give quarterback Aaron Rodgers options, and if they draft running back Duke Johnson out of Miami (Fla.), they will be doing just that. Johnson is quick, fast and explosive, and he can break long plays if given the opportunity. He will be an outstanding complement to powerful Eddie Lacy.
