NFL Draft Results 2015: Round 1 Picks and Grades for Each Team
Quarterbacks were taken with the first two picks of the draft, but neither Jameis Winston of Florida State or Marcus Mariota of Oregon are sure things as they head into their rookie years.
Winston may be an ideal quarterback in terms of build, pocket presence and arm strength, but his performance with the Seminoles dipped during his senior year. Mariota has stellar numbers and his off-the-field comportment is ideal, but he has not done enough in the pocket to prove that he is capable of handling a pro-style offense.
The first round was rich in wide receivers and defensive impact players, and here's our look at how each NFL team did with its first-round pick.
While the picks of Winston and Mariota by the Bucs and Titans, respectively, were the expected moves at the top of the draft, both selections are fascinating.
Winston may have all the measurables to be a brilliant NFL quarterback, but his off-the-field issues had to make it difficult for conservative Tampa Bay head coach Lovie Smith to make the move.
Smith is a coach who does not like to take chances and he also wants to have a hard-hitting and dependable defense. Winston is not going to lead him in either one of those areas. While Winston had a brilliant 2013 season, he did not play to that level in 2014. He's got a lot to prove and he must do it quickly to make this selection pay off.
Mariota had a brilliant Heisman Trophy-winning season, but he took a few hits in the beginning of draft season because he did not play in a pro-style offense with the Ducks. However, the more Mariota was examined by scouts and executives, the better he looked and the higher he climbed. The Titans need a franchise quarterback, and the selection of Mariota was a bold choice.
The No. 2 pick appeared to be in play through much of the pre-draft season, and it was expected that Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly would try to get the quarterback he recruited when he was head coach of Oregon. Instead, Kelly held on to the No. 20 pick in the draft. He used that pick to select USC speedster Nelson Agholor of USC, who is a field-stretching wide receiver and a dynamic special teams weapon. He is a four-down player who should be an impact player in his rookie season.
Running backs returned to the first round of the draft after none were taken that early last year. Georgia running back Todd Gurley was given a clean bill of health following a left knee injury and he was selected by the St. Louis Rams with the No. 10 pick, while explosive Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin was taken five picks later by the San Diego Chargers, who traded up to get him. Gurley and Gordon have a chance to be explosive difference-makers right off the bat for their new teams.
When the Minnesota Vikings selected Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes, it was a huge statement. Not so much about their first-round draft choice, but that running back Adrian Peterson would not be traded. It appears that he will be back in a Vikings uniform in 2015
The Chicago Bears selected a brilliant talent in West Virginia wide receiver Kevin White, and the move makes sense because they parted ways with Brandon Marshall in the offseason. However, the Bears are coming off back-to-back disastrous seasons on defense, and the thinking was that they would go for a top defensive player like Vic Beasley or Danny Shelton.
Veteran coach John Fox is charged with turning this team around, but it may be difficult to do unless the Bears can pick up a true defensive stud later on in the draft.
The New England Patriots got a huge pickup with the No. 32 pick in the first round when they drafted defensive tackle Malcom Brown of Texas. The Pats had moved on from huge Vince Wilfork in the offseason, and it appears they have found a stud to take his place.
The draft resumes Friday night from Chicago as teams will make their second- and third-round choices.
