Why Randy Gregory Is Ideal Fit for Jacksonville Jaguars Defense

A lot of writers and people in the Jacksonville Jaguars community have talked about who the Jaguars should take with the third overall pick in the 2015 draft. Finding the right fit and talent at a draft spot is difficult, but the Jaguars lucked out with Randy Gregory.

Gregory is everything the Jaguars need in their LEO edge rusher. He is athletic, quick and strong enough to compete with large offensive tackles, and this combination allows Gregory to beat blockers in a number of ways.

The 22-year-old is 6'5" and 235 pounds, and he uses his somewhat unusual size to his advantage. A little bit taller and leaner than the other edge-rushers in the draft, Gregory's athleticism makes him perfect for the Jaguars' LEO spot.

Gregory's 17.5 career sacks at Nebraska are a solid sign of this. He has turned his size, which many were unsure of when he first put himself on the map in 2013, into an advantage.

For me, one of the most exciting plays is Gregory's pursuit of a run to the outside at the 35-second mark.

Gregory embarrasses the running back by dodging his block and quickly brings down Northwestern's quarterback. This not only shows his athleticism, but his quickness to change with the play and find the ball, which is a fantastic ability for any defensive lineman to have, not just the LEO spot.

The second moment is at the 46-second mark.

Gregory quickly handles the tackle with his hands and then muscles by the guard. At that point, the quarterback has no chance and Gregory makes sure to finish the play. He showed both his technical and physical skills here, and I'd love to see that in Duval.

These are two of many examples of Gregory's athleticism as well as his other talents. He's a creator of big plays, and he can thrive at the LEO spot and be the star that the Jaguars need on defense.

However, despite the fact that Gregory has all the talent and athleticism the Jaguars need at this spot, recent off-the-field issues have caused doubts for his future in the NFL.

Gregory failed his combine drug test and tested positive for marijuana, which raised concerns for a lot of people, including NFL.com's Gil Brandt and CBS' Pete Prisco.

Brandt definitely has a point that Gregory's draft stock may fall, but that's going to depend on how important the test is to the various NFL teams. 

Prisco makes a much better point. It's concerning that Gregory knew the test was coming and still failed it. While it may be a jump to say that shows a lack of commitment or respect for football, it's still a thought in many people's mind. 

Personally, I don't think Gregory's failed drug test is anything more than him slipping up and not realizing the seriousness of the situation. He still performed very well at the combine and has had a good offseason overall.

The Jaguars could have a top edge-rusher in Gregory, but that doesn't mean that they are set on him. With Leonard Williams, Shane Ray and Dante Fowler Jr. as potential options, they may be more interested in someone else.

However, I think Gregory is the best fit and should be the guy the Jaguars look to bring to Jacksonville. His athleticism and big-play ability would be great tools for a guy who seems to be made for the LEO position.
