Shane Ray: Breaking Down Missouri DE's Pro Day Workout

Tim DanielsMar 19, 2015

Missouri standout Shane Ray is one of the top edge-rushers in the 2015 NFL draft, but he still had a lot to prove at the Tigers' pro day on Thursday after skipping most of the drills at the NFL Scouting Combine due to a foot injury.

Ray posted a respectable 21 reps in the bench press at the combine. He was unable to take part in the other athletic testing or the on-field drills, though. Chase Goodbread of NFL.com passed along comments the top prospect made at the time.

"Unfortunately I won't be able to perform because of an injury I had in my bowl game with my foot," Ray said. "So everything that is listed for tomorrow as far as the 40, and all the athletic drills, I'll be doing on my pro day."

He followed through with that promise.

Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch provided Ray's measurables:

Tony Pauline of Draft Insider noted Ray's slight increase in weight:

Kayce Smith of the SEC Network spoke with Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel, who explained what his departing star's main goal was today:

The action started with the bench press. Since that's the one drill Ray participated in at the combine, he opted to skip it this time around.

Brandon Kiley of KTGR confirmed the decision:

Ray started his day once they moved from the weight room to the field.

Ashley Zavala of KRCG provided video of his first 40-yard dash:

Kiley highlighted his second run:

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller passed along the consensus unofficial times:

After the athletic testing, they moved to positional drills. Ray did work in both roles he's working to prove he can fill at the next level: defensive end and outside linebacker. He showed an intriguing combination of power and quickness.

Matt Weller of MUTV gave a look at some of the work:

Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star states Ray said after the workout he's accepted an invitation to the draft:

All told, nothing that happened on Thursday will likely have a major impact on Ray's draft stock. Talent evaluators may have been hoping he would run a couple ticks quicker. Beyond that, it was a solid overall showing.

He's a fringe top-10 prospect as things stand right now. The high number of teams looking for edge-rushers should ensure he doesn't go through any type of significant slide on draft day. A team just needs to feel confident he can fit its system.

His pro day should have helped alleviate some of those concerns.
