NFL Veteran Combine 2015: Full Roster and Players to Watch at Inaugural Event

Chris RolingMar 18, 2015

Tim Tebow won't be in attendance, but the 2015 NFL Veteran Combine—the first of its kind—will be worth a look.

The league hosts the event on March 22 at the Arizona Cardinals' training facility and will remind spectators of the NFL Scouting Combine. There, veterans who applied for a spot in the event will run a gauntlet of drills ranging from timed measurements to position-specific workouts.

As a way to streamline the free-agency process and give veterans a chance to make a team, scouts from all 32 franchises will attend.

Top Names to Watch

Joe Adams, WR

The last couple of wideout draft classes and what is sure to be a stellar offering this year make it hard for veteran wideouts to find room in the NFL.

This even applies to 25-year-old former fourth-round picks such as Joe Adams.

Adams entered the league in the 2012 NFL draft via pick No. 104 by the Carolina Panthers. A bit of a project player who ran a 4.55 40-yard-dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, Adams was deployed on special teams and appeared in nine games.

The Panthers moved on from Adams, which resulted in his bouncing around the Canadian Football League and a brief summer camp audition with the Houston Texans before the 2014 season.

It'll be interesting to see if Adams still has the same explosiveness as a returner. He's young and many teams now keep specialists who only return kicks on rosters, so it wouldn't be a shock to see the combine turn into another summer audition for the Arkansas product.

Adam Carriker, DL

Remember Adam Carriker?

The No. 13 pick in the 2007 draft by the St. Louis Rams and one of the few former first-round picks in attendance in Tempe, Arizona, Carriker is a notable comeback story.

Going into his age-31 season, the former Nebraska standout has not been on the NFL field since 2012 thanks to injury, as knee issues that began at the start of the 2012 season carried over until his eventual release in March of 2014.

For his part, though, Carriker sounds motivated to prove he's 100 percent:

If Carriker looks sharp at the workout, it's hard to imagine he doesn't receive another shot. He's a former first-round pick who at his peak in 2010 ranked as the No. 22 3-4 defensive end in the NFL at Pro Football Focus.

If healthy, Carriker might be a critical piece of depth for the right team.

Mikel Leshoure, RB

The continued devaluation of running back isn't doing Mikel Leshoure any favors.

Leshoure is just 24 years old and on fresh wheels, but the 2011 second-round pick features the bust label after falling down the depth chart with the Detroit Lions before his August 2014 release.

There's a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel for the former Illinois star, though.

It's easy to forget after missing his entire rookie season with a torn Achilles, Leshoure went out in 2012 and led the Lions in rushing with 798 yards and nine touchdowns.

Now, a 3.7 per-carry average isn't impressive, but in today's committee approach to the backfield, there's room in the NFL for a 24-year-old back who bruises well between the tackles to pick up short gains.

All Leshoure has to do? Shed the bust label in the desert.

Michael Sam, DE

The headline act of the inaugural veteran combine, defensive end Michael Sam has a lot to prove to NFL scouts.

The former seventh-round pick weighs in at 6'2" and 261 pounds, although his weight means he struggles to play with his hand in the dirt in a 4-3 alignment and stop the run. His lack of speed—he ran a 4.91 40-yard-dash at the combine—prohibits him from playing linebacker.

Pro Football Focus hit Sam with a negative grade in two of his four performances with the St. Louis Rams last preseason before his release, although in that span he did tally two sacks and three quarterback hits and hurries.

Sam is a high-energy player with plenty of room for growth and improvement at just 25 years old. The former SEC Defensive Player of the Year has a unique opportunity under the spotlight of the inaugural veteran combine to convince scouts his deficiencies are continuing to diminish as he develops his game.

Should Sam shine among former first-round picks and fellow veterans, he's sure to put ink to paper with a team for summer camps and play next preseason.
