Michael Johnson to Bengals: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Even though Michael Johnson didn't plan to be a free agent this offseason, the veteran defensive end was able to take advantage of his opportunity, reportedly agreeing to terms with the Bengals on Sunday.

Bengals, Johnson Agree to Terms

"Former Bengals DE Michael Johnson is returning to Cincinnati, having reached agreement with team," as ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported and Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com later corroborated. "Johnson's new deal with the Bengals is for four years. Homecoming for him. Bengals looking for pass rush," added CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Schefter provided a breakdown of the financial terms of the contract:

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the deal's value increases to $24 million if Johnson tallies 10 sacks next season.

Johnson got big money from Tampa Bay last year, signing a five-year, $43.75 million deal, but he was released by the team March 11 after recording four sacks in 14 games. 

Paul Dehner Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer mentioned how the move comes with a bit of irony:

It was an interesting turn of events, as NFL.com's Michael Silver reported the Buccaneers had worked out a trade involving Johnson, but his contract posed a problem:

Instead, while unable to hang on to the big deal he signed in 2014, Johnson had the luxury of picking his new home after a lost season. 

One of Johnson's weaknesses last year, per Pro Football Focus, was his inability to defend the run at the level he did during his best days in Cincinnati:

Whether that was a product of injuries, scheme fit or simply a down season that players are bound to have, Johnson will have to rebuild his reputation in 2015. 

The 28-year-old isn't far removed from being a productive defensive lineman, and he isn't at an age where his skills should appreciably decline, so he could prove to be a solid bargain this offseason.
