Trent Baalke Comments on Kaepernick Trade Rumors

Monday, March 9

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke released a brief statement denying the team is shopping Kaepernick, per Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com: "Colin is our quarterback and we are excited to have him. He is not going anywhere. The media reports suggesting otherwise are without merit and, quite frankly, ridiculous."

Jayson Braddock of SportsTalk 790 in Houston reported the 49ers are looking to deal their 27-year-old quarterback. The Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears are two teams believed to be interested, per Braddock.

In case fans believed Baalke was putting up a smoke screen, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, "Well-placed 49ers official on report that SF is seeking to trade QB Colin Kaepernick: 'Totally false. 0% truth.'"

Around The NFL reported that "one team called and inquired about Kaepernick" but that the team will not trade him.

Albert Breer of NFL.com also reported that San Francisco brought Geep Chryst in as offensive coordinator because Kaepernick supported him, making rumors of a potential departure odd.

Jim Trotter of ESPN passed along what he was hearing regarding Baalke's communication with Kapernick:

On one hand, it's a bit surprising San Francisco would so quickly sour on a player it signed to a six-year extension worth more than $110 million last June (with a record $61 million guaranteed).

On the other, Jim Harbaugh is no longer the head coach, and Kaepernick's numbers haven't exactly seen a demonstrable jump over the past three years. His 2014 quarterback rating was 86.4, down from 91.6 in 2013 and 98.3 in 2012. Further, his 8-8 team took a big step backward last season, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Still, many will likely remain skeptical that the 49ers will move Kaepernick until he's actually traded. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah doesn't think the Niners have a wealth of other options in the event they deal their starting QB:

Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson doesn't see the financial details working out, either:

Should the team move Kaepernick before the 2015 season, it would be the most shocking development in an offseason already full of major transactions.
