Russell Wilson Will Return to Texas Rangers for 2015 Spring Training

Tim DanielsFeb 3, 2015

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson will probably spend a lot of time this offseason thinking about the interception that sealed the Super Bowl victory for the New England Patriots. A return trip to spring training with the Texas Rangers should help take some of the sting away.

Anthony Andro of Fox Sports Southwest reports exact plans for his return to Rangers camp are still being worked out. The team previously moved him onto the Triple-A roster to prevent another organization from grabbing him in the Rule 5 draft:

"

The Rangers drafted Wilson in the Rule 5 draft in 2013 and put him on the Double-A roster. He was put on Triple-A roster this offseason in an effort to keep teams from drafting Wilson in the Rule 5 draft. If they would have done so they would have had to put Wilson on the major-league roster.

Andro notes Wilson took infield practice and spoke with minor league players before watching an exhibition game when he visited last year.

Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com passed along comments from the quarterback about the journey he's taken and how it may have been different if he had chosen baseball:

"

I think God kind of directed my steps. If I would have played baseball full-time, I believe it would've worked out. I was dedicated to playing baseball when I was playing baseball. I was dedicated to football when I was playing football. I believe I had the talent. Obviously being drafted by the Texas Rangers was a pretty cool thing last year. So to be a part of that organization is a great thing. It's really an honor.

"

Ultimately, the Rangers know the chances of Wilson—who played in the Colorado Rockies system for a while—ever suiting up for their organization on a full-time basis are virtually nonexistent. But they clearly believe keeping him with the club, even if it means just having him at spring training, can help.

He's been a positive influence on the Seahawks since he arrived. By talking with players working their way through the Texas system, perhaps he can bring the same uplifting vibes to the baseball diamond.

Wilson and the Seahawks are disappointed in how the Super Bowl ended. There's nothing they can do about it now, however. It's time to start moving forward. For the quarterback, that means shifting his attention to a different sport entirely.
