Odell Beckham Jr. Named 2014 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year
New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made quite an impression on the NFL during his rookie season. The Associated Press thought so highly of the young star that it named him Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The Giants congratulated their rookie receiver via Twitter:
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News noted the finalists for the award and an interesting note about Beckham's win:
Making Beckham's numbers even more impressive is the fact that he played in just 12 games, sitting out the first four games of the year with a hamstring injury. The former LSU star set an NFL record for receiving yards through 12 games, per ESPN Stats & Info:
That wasn't the only record Beckham set in his debut season. Around the NFL noted he tied Hall of Famer Michael Irvin's single-season record for consecutive games with at least 90 receiving yards:
From Week 9 until the end of 2014, Beckham was an unstoppable force for the Giants. He got a lot of attention for his circus catches, but there's so much more to his game than that. You can't go that many games with at least 90 yards receiving by accident.
However, according to Giants quarterback Eli Manning, when he spoke to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post after the regular-season finale against Philadelphia, Beckham's biggest challenge for 2015 is happening right now:
"I think sometimes, the first true offseason is probably the biggest adjustment. You’ve never had 3 1/2 months off where you are on your own. You have to figure out when you are going to work out, where you’re going to eat, where you’re going to live, what you are going to be doing the next 3 1/2 months with no supervision. It’s different.
"
Beckham doesn't seem like the type of player who is going to rest on his laurels, letting past success dictate the future. So Manning should have no qualms about seeing his new favorite target suffer a drop in production.
That's scary for the rest of the NFL to think about. If Beckham is putting up historic numbers already, what's going to happen when he really has the league figured out? The Rookie of the Year award is the first of what figures to be many honors coming his way.
