Fantasy Football Week 17: Daily League Guide to Sunday's Action

Eric MackDec 27, 2014

Your yearly league(s) might have closed up shop for the season, but the wonderment and splendor of daily fantasy football can keep you setting lineups and winning money in Week 17. We help you do so with Bleacher Report's Daily League Guide to Sunday's Action.

Week 17 is a tricky one, because a number of players or teams can put it in operation shutdown. We have five matchups here you should feel confident about seeing teams playing competitively all the way through (with the OddsShark.com Las Vegas totals in parentheses). Also, we break down the top buys by position at DraftKings.com, our choice for the dollar values you will see in the following slides.

There are any number of potential winning combinations, even in a week where so many players might not play a full complement of snaps. We won't bore you or hold you to a single recommended lineup as much as present the analysis and a number of options to fill out lineups for the regular-season finales.

Note: We use FFToday.com in all references to fantasy scoring against specific positions.

Stacking Game No. 1: Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants (52.5 Total)

1 of 10

Neither team is playing for any playoff hopes, but both are out to salvage some pride from a disappointing season. There are very good reasons this is the highest Vegas total on the board.

Eli Manning ($7,100) and Odell Beckham ($9,600) are scorching hot and have inflated prices, but the Eagles are a bottom-eight pass defense. They are third worst against fantasy quarterbacks and dead last against wide receivers. Rueben Randle ($4,800) is a good bargain, particularly coming off a Week 16 revival of six catches for 132 yards and a touchdown.

Mark Sanchez ($6,700), meanwhile, is playing for his NFL future and making his return to his house of horrors in New Jersey, where he wants to exorcise those New York Jets demons. The Giants are fifth-worst against quarterbacks, too. Sanchez is at least a bargain in a good matchup.

Jeremy Maclin ($6,100) and Jordan Matthews ($4,600) are favorable buys, while LeSean McCoy ($6,700) is looking to finish a disappointing season strong.

Since this is a divisional matchup with pride still on the line, we expect both teams to let it all hang out offensively throughout.

Stacking Game No. 2: Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers (48)

2 of 10

You have to love the fact that this game determines a home playoff game. Expect both teams to take that seriously, despite both having already qualified for the postseason.

The vulnerabilities are on the opposite sides of the spectrum defensively. The Steelers are suspect against the pass (sixth-worst), while the Bengals are a bottom-10 run defense.

Le'Veon Bell ($9,500) is the highest-priced back on the board, if there is someone worth the premium this week, it is him, especially at websites with a full point per reception like Draft Kings and DraftDay. Bell had his best day of the season against the Bengals last time out, rushing for 185 yards and two touchdowns in addition to grabbing six passes for 50 yards and another score in Week 14.

No one should be excited about starting their team with Andy Dalton ($6,000) this week, but he is at least a bargain among quarterbacks and is facing the right matchup. The Steelers have allowed the sixth-most points to fantasy quarterbacks.

Mohamed Sanu ($4,000) hasn't been fantasy relevant in weeks, but he is at least affordable. He makes for an intriguing roster filler after you have loaded up on bigger-budget buys.

Jeremy Hill ($6,000) is scorching right now, having rushed for 148-2 and 147-1 in the past two weeks. It is too bad he isn't more involved as a pass receiver, though. Giovani Bernard ($4,800) saps those points from him.

Stacking Game No. 3: Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons (47.5)

3 of 10

This is a game of second chances. Both the Panthers (6-8-1) and Falcons (6-9) have to feel fortunate to be sitting on a potential home playoff game with a victory in Week 17 here. This might be the most exciting game of the week, because the loser goes home.

Even more than the two previous matchups we detailed before, these teams are going to fight all the way through. Even if the matchup is less intriguing, you might prefer this one because the stars will stay in the game regardless of the score.

If you are looking for an injury-related bargain, it will be Falcons rookie Devonta Freeman ($3,600). Freeman is not only coming off his first rushing touchdown of his career in Week 16, but he is also getting moved up the pecking order with Steven Jackson (quad) not expected to play, according to ESPN.com's Vaughn McClureJacquizz Rodgers ($3,600) is expected to start and get the bulk of the early duty, but we like Freeman to get the better production like he did last week.

Jonathan Stewart ($5,700) draws fantasy's worst team against running backs with a reasonable price tag, so expect him to be the most-used option in all of fantasy this week. Stewart has been healthier and more productive than he has been all season of late.

Even though DeAngelo Williams ($3,700) is listed as probable (hand), the Panthers are going to start Stewart, according to ESPN.com's David Newton. Don't let Williams' status scare you off Stewart. The Panthers are a team that wants to start with the run. Stewart is going to get a lot of touches and the important ones near the goal line against an opponent that has given up a league-high 22 touchdowns to fantasy backs.

Kelvin Benjamin ($6,200) has a favorable matchup among the receivers in this one. The Falcons are sixth-worst against fantasy receivers, giving up a league-high 3,073 yards to the position.

Stacking Game No. 4: Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins (49)

4 of 10

If not for Dallas having clinched the NFC East already, we would have loved this matchup to get more loose. As it is, it can be, but Tony Romo (back) and DeMarco Murray (hand) are likely to get some time off here, even if Dallas is starting its regulars, owner Jerry Jones told KRLD-FM 105.3 (per The Dallas Morning News).

Regardless, you cannot like the Cowboys running game against a Washington Redskins front that is top 10 against the run and No. 3 against fantasy backs. Murray ($8,800), Joseph Randle ($4,200) and Lance Dunbar ($3,600) are players to avoid because of the matchup. Dunbar, because of his price and receiving ability, might be the best play of the three.

We don't expect Romo ($8,000) to get a full run here, but Terrance Williams ($3,500) and Cole Beasley ($3,500) look like a huge bargains to consider against a Redskins secondary that has given up the fourth-most points to fantasy wideouts this season. Even if the starters are out to rest for the postseason, we expect the Cowboys to keep using Williams and Beasley.

Alfred Morris ($4,600) is a solid buy, especially if you don't feel good about Robert Griffin III ($5,700) and his inconsistent targets. Why should you at this point?

Stacking Game No. 5: Oakland Raiders at Denver Broncos (48)

5 of 10

This is one of the highest totals on the board, but you cannot trust using Peyton Manning ($8,600). The Broncos have to play to win—since the first-round bye challengers (Cincinnati Bengals) are not playing until the Sunday night game—but the Broncos might be able to do so easily against the Oakland Raiders.

C.J. Anderson ($7,000) has a great matchup in this one against the Raiders run defense, which is third worst in fantasy against backs. Regardless of the Broncos' potential inclination to use Ronnie Hillman ($5,000) or Juwan Thompson ($3,000), we expect Anderson to get 20 touches and double-digit fantasy points.

The Raiders, on the other hand, are peppered with sleepers and bargains, but short on sure things. Derek Carr ($5,300) should get a full game against the seventh-worst team in fantasy against quarterbacks. He is a nice buy if you need to go cheap at quarterback.

Latavius Murray ($5,000) is emerging, but the Broncos are the second-best run defense in football. Avoid him.

Top Quarterback Buys

6 of 10

Here are three quarterbacks worth their price this week:

  1. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons ($7,700): We cannot guarantee which receiver reaps the rewards, but Ryan is in a win-or-go-home matchup at home. We should expect a game effort of 350 yards passing and three touchdowns. Unlike most of the elite quarterbacks, Ryan is going to get a full game, too.
  2. Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins ($7,200): He is coming off a big performance and facing a Jets team that has given up the third-most touchdown passes to fantasy quarterbacks (30).
  3. Eli Manning, New York Giants ($7,100): It is hard to bet against Odell Beckham Jr. right now, especially in the matchup we broke down at the beginning of this slideshow.

Top Running Back Buys

7 of 10

Here are three running backs worth their price this week:

  1. Jeremy Hill, Cincinnati Bengals ($6,000): He is red-hot and the focal point of offensive coordinator Hue Jackson's power-running attack.
  2. Devonta Freeman, Atlanta Falcons ($3,600): Even if he doesn't start, you should love his matchup and his pass receiving potential.
  3. Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers ($5,700): They will stay stubborn with the run and the matchup could not be more favorable.

Top Wide Receiver Buys

8 of 10

Here are three wide receivers worth their price this week:

  1. Kelvin Benjamin, Carolina Panthers ($6,200): The Falcons are the right matchup and the Panthers are in a must-win game here.
  2. Rueben Randle, New York Giants ($4,800): He is coming off a big performance and should get looks with all the attention Odell Beckham Jr. is sure to draw amid his legendary hot streak.
  3. Terrance Williams/Cole Beasley, Dallas Cowboys ($3,500): As we wrote in the stacking slide, you should expect these two to be frequent targets throughout the game, even if Tony Romo and Dez Bryant get some rest before the postseason. The prices are right here.

Top Tight End Buys

9 of 10

Here are three tight end worth their price this week:

  1. Tim Wright, New England Patriots ($3,000): Rob Gronkowski might be the most valuable non-quarterback in the entire NFL heading into the postseason. Expect a rare busy day for Wright, especially once Jimmy Garoppolo comes on for Tom Brady.
  2. Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins ($3,500): We like him to get involved against a New York Giants defense that is in the bottom 10 of fantasy against tight ends.
  3. Coby Fleener, Indianapolis Colts ($4,700): Dwayne Allen is more likely to need the time off before the postseason and the Tennessee Titans have been one of the more vulnerable teams against fantasy tight ends for most of the season.

Top Defense/Special Teams Buys

10 of 10

Here are three defense/special teams worth their price this week:

  1. Seattle Seahawks ($3,600): They won't be denied at home—not the way they are playing right now.
  2. Houston Texans ($3,200): They are clinging to playoff hopes, which should aid a blowout of the Jacksonville Jaguars at home.
  3. Arizona Cardinals ($3,100): They are coming off an embarrassing defeat and are facing a suspect San Francisco 49ers offense with a lame-duck head coach, Jim Harbaugh.
