Matt Prater to Lions: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Joseph ZuckerOct 7, 2014

The Detroit Lions aren't wasting any time in trying to solve their kicking problem. A few days after Alex Henery went 0-of-3 in a 17-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the team is reportedly signing Matt Prater, per ESPN's Adam Schefter:

The Lions would later confirm the move:

The Denver Broncos released Prater last week after the veteran kicker became expendable in part because of his four-game suspension to start the year. Brandon McManus has also performed well as Prater's replacement, giving the Broncos the impetus to part ways with a player who made the Pro Bowl in 2013.

Schefter reported on Monday that the Lions were inviting Prater and Jay Feely to work out with an eye toward signing one of the two:

Following Henery's struggles, many suggested that Detroit would attempt to grab Prater as quickly as possible:

"We've got to find a performer," said Lions head coach Jim Caldwell on Monday, per ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein. "That's basically what we have to get done. In that area you've got to get a guy who is consistent under pressure and will be able to get us some points on the board."

For his career, Prater has converted 142 of 174 field goals, including 21-of-27 from at least 50 yards. However, he's slightly worse away from Denver (68-of-85) than he was at Sports Authority Field (74-of-89).

Heading into Week 6, the Lions are tied for the NFC North lead with the Green Bay Packers. Most will agree that their chances of making the postseason were strengthened with the addition of Prater.

Prater doesn't have much time to get a feel for his new team, with Detroit traveling to Minnesota to take on a division foe in the Vikings on Sunday.
