The Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 16

Giants27Jul 18, 2009

Week 16 of the Fantasy Baseball season is upon us and so is my waiver wire.

Add Them Now

Garrett Jones, 1B, Pittsburgh Pirates

Jones only has 48 at bats in the majors this season but has made the most of it. He's currently hitting .312 with seven home runs and 9 RBI. Now be careful he doesn't have a proven track record and could just be getting lucky but if need someone who can hit for power don't hesitate to pick up Jones.

Mat Latos, SP, San Diego Padres

I'd usually tell you all to hold off on picking up the next hot prospect but Latos is different. Different in that in Single-A he had a 0.36 ERA and in Double-A he had a 1.91 ERA. Latos has a awful team behind him so watch him in his start Sunday, I'd expect nothing less than a win.

Drop Them Now

Gil Meche, SP, Kansas City Royals

Personally, I dropped Meche a few weeks ago but he just hit the disabled list. Meche wasn't great before injuring his back as he had a 4-9 record with a 4.50 ERA. Drop him in favor of a guy like Latos or JA Happ.

Brandon Morrow, RP, Seattle Mariners

Morrow was sent down to the minors to make room for Jack Hannahan a few days ago. Before the demotion he was 0-4 with six saves and a 5.28 ERA. The M's former closer is of no fantasy use for the near future.

Monitor Their Status

Jonathan Sanchez, SP, San Francisco Giants

Sanchez pitched the season's first no-hitter, but that doesn't mean he's useful for fantasy purposes. Sanchez's no-no is like the one Florida Marlins' starter Anibal Sanchez threw in 2007 because the guy was the last one you'd expect to do it and will never been anything special in the next year.

Pedro Martinez, SP, Philadelphia Phillies

See last week's waiver wire for more info. He's going to start rehabbing with Single-A Clearwater. Watch his debut closely to see if he's still got what it takes to pitch.
