Positives

  • Fine athletic traits include light feet, lateral quickness and flexibility.
  • Has the initial quickness to accelerate around the corner and win as a speed-rusher.
  • Works a quick and effective spin move.
  • Instinctive rusher who can take advantage of blockers with poor balance.
  • Quick feet to dart in either direction and beat heavy-footed pass-blockers in space.
  • Can get skinny to squeeze through tight spaces as a rusher, effective on stunts to the inside.
  • Tremendous range in pass coverage, back pedals to drop in a hurry.
  • Plays with his head on a swivel to drop into passing lanes.
  • Keeps outside shoulder free and will set a hard edge in a contain role.
  • Chases with a high motor, gets to the ball and makes a lot of tackles.
  • Effective in pursuit whether flowing over the top or chasing from the backside.
  • Disciplined in pursuit lanes, doesn’t run himself out of plays.
  • Wrecked plays when left unblocked, attacks without hesitation.
  • Played from two- and three-point stances and lined up all over the field for Utah.
  • Adequate anticipation and play recognition skills.

Negatives

  • Lean build, especially below the waist.
  • Much more of a finesse player than one who utilizes functional strength.
  • Effectiveness wanes when playing with hands in the dirt or from head-up alignments.
  • Hand usage is almost non-existent as a pass-rusher for stretches.
  • Doesn’t work a variety of pass rush moves to win immediately.
  • Coverage experience limited to dropping in zones.
  • Will give ground if asked to stack drive blocks at the point of attack.
  • Loses his footing and ends up on the ground too often when blockers get to his chest.
  • Not a true stack and shed end, tries to slide off blocks but struggles to accelerate from contact.
  • Drops his head and aims low as a tackler, not a heavy-hitter by any means.
  • Older prospect who is likely fully developed physically.
  • May require a position change to a more traditional linebacker position.

Personal Notes

  • Signed with Texas Tech as a 2-star recruit in the class of 2006, according to Rivals
  • Decommitted from Texas Tech during an LDS mission and walked-on at Utah.
  • 26-year-old prospect due to two years on mission after high school before redshirting.
  • Had a procedure to correct a meniscus in his right knee and did not participate in the NFL Scouting Combine.

Ratings Chart

Overall

Trevor Reilly may have flown under the radar for the majority of his college career, but he’s been an impactful defender at Utah for some time.  His production speaks for itself, but Reilly’s playing style will be attractive to NFL teams.  He’s a relentless defender with obvious football instincts.  His athleticism and versatility are both a plus.

Being 26 years old may indicate that Reilly is maxed out or close to as a football player.  That will limit what teams see in him when it comes to future upside.  As far as positional fits, Reilly must play on his feet.  A rush linebacker spot in a 3-4 or even an outside linebacker spot in a 4-3 make sense.
