Positives

  • Prototypical size at 6’5”, 232 pounds.
  • Athletic with light feet and excellent mobility. Plays much faster than his 40-yard dash time.
  • Very good pocket presence. He displays poise and confidence under pressure.
  • Does not drop his eyes, keeps his focus downfield as the pocket collapses.
  • Impressive escapability, is able to extend plays with his feet.
  • Capable of gaining yards on the ground both outside and between the tackles.
  • Climbs the pocket instinctively and throws well on the move.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Throws the ball with touch.
  • Possesses an NFL arm.
  • Smart player. He handled a lot of responsibility at the line of scrimmage for Central Florida and seems to have a fairly high football IQ.
  • Quick feet for a player his size, flashing good footwork at times.
  • Able to move from his spot, reset and find an open receiver.
  • Engineered several big fourth-quarter comebacks in 2013, showing mental toughness.
  • Always knows where his checkdown is located.
  • Seems to take well to coaching, many schools recruited him as a tight end out of high school
  • Exceptionally high ceiling.

Negatives

  • Is still a bit raw.
  • Footwork and throwing mechanics occasionally break down for stretches at a time, affecting his accuracy and velocity.
  • Inconsistent ball placement, needs to do a better job of leading his receiver at times.
  • Does not always transfer weight properly and velocity occasionally suffers as a result.
  • Must do a better job of protecting the football, keeping the ball above his waist as he maneuvers the pocket and works his way through traffic.
  • Somewhat elongated delivery.
  • Inconsistent deep ball that occasionally flutters and often misses the mark.
  • Anticipation is a question mark.
  • While it may be due to his offensive design or play-calling, he did a lot of dinking and dunking at UCF with limited attempts downfield.
  • Runs hot and cold.
  • Could have benefited from returning to school for his senior season.
  • Will require a good quarterbacks coach at the next level to help him maximize his physical talent and make strides as a thrower.

Overall

While many felt Bortles would have been better served returning to school and refining his game, the physical and mental tools he brings to the table are undeniable. Equipped with prototypical size, mobility and strong leadership traits, he will appeal to a variety of schemes and is silly putty in the hands of a good offensive coach. His ability to maneuver and escape the pocket, making plays on the move, is nothing short of impressive.

At this time, his bread and butter is attacking the short-to-intermediate range, but he possesses the arm to stretch the field. Possessing considerable upside, several teams are sure to view him as a potential franchise quarterback.

Draft Projection: 1st Round
