Do we know who Von Miller really is?
Before he was suspended in August, the Denver Broncos All-Pro linebacker was seen as one of the NFL's good guys. He was a media darling, as he could play with great ferocity during games yet be pleasant and introspective once they ended.
Now, we know of a different Miller, in light of details confirmed by Bleacher Report: The NFL discovered a plot between Miller and a drug collector to fool its drug testing system, according to a high-ranking league source.
The news was first reported by ESPN.
According to Bleacher Report's source, Miller "got caught" in the entire scheme after another collector discovered what was happening and reported it to his bosses. Miller and a drug collector colluded to submit a sample that didn't belong to Miller—presumably a clean one.
The league source confirms the collector became a part of the alleged scheme because he was enamored with Miller, a two-time Pro Bowler and the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2011. The scheme was uncovered when another collector discovered that Miller was not where he was supposed to be during a scheduled test.
The NFL wanted a yearlong suspension, the source says, but since the collector, who has since been fired, was as complicit as Miller, it backed off. The league ultimately decided to suspend Miller for six games, instead of the standard four, for his violation of the league's substance-abuse policy.
Another source recently described the Miller situation as "complicated."
Boy, I'll say.
The good news is that the scheme was revealed. The bad news is that this absolutely destroys Miller's reputation. It's going to be hard for anyone to believe anything he says now.
