Robert Griffin III Comments on Gay NFL Players Potentially Coming Out

The possibility of an active NFL player coming out as gay remains a hot topic. Speaking on the subject, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III believes there are gay players in the league right now and thinks there's a window of opportunity for them to make it known.

His comments on the sensitive subject were among the outtakes from a recent interview with GQ magazine, as passed along by Brendan Vaughan.

Yeah, man. I think there are [gay players] right now, and if they're looking for a window to just come out, I mean, now is the window. My view on it is, yes, I am a Christian, but to each his own. You do what you want to do. If some Christians want to look at being gay as a sin, then thinking about other women, committing adultery—or any of those other sins that are in the Bible—those are sins, too. And God looks at all of us the same way.

"

Griffin, who took the league by storm last season, is becoming an increasingly important voice in the football community. As one of the players who will be expected to lead the next generation of stars, his input is important.    

His stance isn't controversial by any means. In fact, it's more of a laissez-faire approach, as he seeks to let everybody live their own lives in whatever manner they feel comfortable despite his Christian faith.

Of course, not everybody feels that way. There would be countless different opinions about a gay player in a team's locker room, and not all of them would be positive. Griffin is just one voice of 53, albeit a very high-profile one.

And that fear of potential backlash from both teammates and other players around the league is likely one of the major reasons gay players haven't made their personal lives publicly known.

Furthermore, it's a lot easier for a player like RG3 to send a message of support than it would be for somebody who has a different world view to state the opposing opinion.

Whether comments like those Griffin made help lead to a gay player coming out is unclear, but it does signal there would be support should they eventually make that decision.
