Raul Ibanez Throws Like Carly Rae Jepsen, Commits Ridiculous Error in Outfield

Dan CarsonJun 8, 2018

Raul Ibanez threw this ball like Carly Rae Jepsen—which is about as bad as it gets.

The Seattle Mariners didn’t have the best of luck during Tuesday night’s 7-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The team committed four errors during the course of the ballgame, and one of them might be in the running for an MLB “Razzie” Award.

The particularly inauspicious play was spotted by Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today, and the culprit was Mariners outfielder Raul Ibanez.

Ibanez was attempting to throw in from left field when he caught a case of sticky hands and ended up slinging the ball almost parallel to his shoulders.

The ball hit the ground several yards away and rolled toward center field. The error gave up a run to Jose Bautista, who scored by running all the way from first and tallied the Blue Jays' seventh run of the game.

How does this happen? It almost seems against the laws of physics, but we have seen it before.

Indeed, Jepsen’s dismal first pitch at Tropicana Field in July is the closest thing we’ve seen to the awfulness Ibanez managed to cook up Tuesday.

We’re not laughing at you, Raul. We’re laughing with you—although I'm not sure how funny you found this situation. These things happen in baseball, and at least you aren’t the Chicago Cubs, who have turned the error into an art form over the course of the season.

Cheer up, bud. There will be days like this. In the meantime, try to avoid watching SportsCenter this Friday.
