2013 Fantasy Football: Whose Stock Is Falling This Offseason?

Garrett BakerJul 12, 2013

With the start of NFL training camp inching closer, it can be beneficial to look at the past couple months to predict how camp may go for certain players in regards to their fantasy football outlook.

I have already looked at players whose stocks have risen so far this offseason, but there are certainly others who have seen their stock drop.

Whether it is about injuries, offseason woes, trades or the draft, current players have seen their respective stocks taken a hit.

There's no telling what might happen during training camp, but for these players, their fantasy outlook is not as bright as it could be.

Justin Blackmon

1 of 4

As talented as Justin Blackmon is, let's remember first and foremost that he plays for the Jaguars and will have Chad Henne or Blaine Gabbert throwing him the ball in 2013.

But specifically this offseason, Blackmon has not done himself any favors. Just last week a report came out that he had groin surgery, which will hamper his workouts as he prepares for his season.

Blackmon will have some extra time to prepare due to being suspended for the first four games of the year for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. This is his third substance-related incident in the past three years.

Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski

2 of 4

Tom Brady is still Tom Brady, but I would be absolutely shocked if he repeats his numbers from last season, which were down from the previous year.

He completed the same number of passes in 2012 as he did in 2011, but for about 400 less yards and five less touchdowns.

With the departures of Aaron Hernandez and Wes Welker, I expect his yardage, as well as his touchdown numbers, to decrease somewhat substantially this year. The injuries to the other star, Rob Gronkowski, will harm the passing game too.

This "Summer of Gronk" has been a bit different from last year, as he underwent forearm surgery in May and is currently rehabbing from a back surgery.

Gronk can't be counted on as the same 100 percent beast from the past, and it looks like the entire Patriots passing game will take a step back.

Guys like Welker did not succeed in the Patriots system in spite of other players like Hernandez and Gronkowski, they succeeded because of them, and vice versa.

With no big talents to take pressure off the rest of the bunch, there may not be much Brady can do.

Ryan Mathews

3 of 4

In his first three seasons in the NFL, Ryan Mathews has been somewhat of a disappointment. For starters, he has only played in 38 of 48 possible games in his career thus far.

Last season, he only played in 12 games, and saw his rushing average drop to 3.8 YPC while only scoring one touchdown, as short-yardage plays were vultured by Ronnie Brown and Le'Ron McClain.

He has been ravaged by fumbles and inconsistency, and because the arrival of Danny Woodhead should further cut into his usage, I expect Mathews to be mediocre this year.

Stephen Hill

Stephen Hill underwent surgery this Winter to repair his LCL, which isn't exactly the best way to start off an offseason when you are a receiver who relies on speed for success.

Then this offseason, Hill has been constantly dogged by his reputation for having stone hands, which doesn't help things either.

Finally, he's stuck on an anemic New York Jets offense, and will have either Mark Sanchez or rookie Geno Smith throwing him passes. Don't expect a statistical boost in his second season.
