"With the 12th pick, in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select, Knowshon Moreno, runningback, Georgia."
- NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell
On April 25th, the Denver Broncos made one of the most head scratching moves in the Draft when they selected Knowshon Moreno out of Georgia. They had much more important needs than runningback, but coach McDaniels was compelled to draft this promising runningback. Now that the dust has settled, and Draft day has past, everybody is excited to move forward to next season.
This past week, the new rookies selected their numbers. Top picks such as Robert Ayers, who picked 56, and Alfonzo Smith, who picked 33, got first choice for the numbers they wanted. Only one person got to pick in front of them, and that was Moreno himself.
In college, he wore 24, which is star cornerback Champ Bailey's number. So, what did he pick? After thinking for awhile, he finally decided on a number. What was it?
When he chose to wear 27, he did not know the history of the number. When he went to report to team officials his selection, he was told the story of what happened on January 1st, 2007. The story of cornerback Darrent Williams.
December 31st, 2006 The Denver Broncos head into an away game with San Fransisco. The plan was simple for the Broncos: If you win, you get in the playoffs; If you loose, you're out. After the final whistle in the fourth quarter, the game was tied. Heading into overtime, conerback Darrent Williams did not know that this extra period was extending his last game ever played.
With under three minutes left in OT, the 49ers kicked a field goal to win the game. This loss was the end of Williams career. Early the next morning, he was in a drive by shooting while heading back from a New Year's Eve party. He died almost instantly.
After hearing this story, Moreno did not know what to do. He wanted this number, but did not want to be disrespectful. He took this problem head on. He asked the Broncos officials for Mrs. Williams phone number. He called the woman he had never met and asked if he could wear her son's number in honor of him.
What was her reaction? She said yes, on one condition. He was to donate some of his time each month to the Darrent Williams Teen Center. He agreed.
On September 8th, Denver will play their first game of the season against Cincinnati. This will be the first time that 27 has been worn since Darrent Williams death.
Knowshon Moreno is an amazing player and person. He will wear Darrent's number with respect and glory. Hopefully, he will not disappoint.
RIP Darrent Williams
