Jerry Jones continues to hurt the Cowboys.

Teams and fanbases rightfully expect to improve during the NFL draft.

Otherwise, why even bother going through such an incredibly deep evaluation, right? And the impact of making correct selections has proven to instantly turn a franchise's fortunes around.

It simply comes down to picking well from an all-encompassed perspective.

Entering the 2013 campaign, though, not everyone completely buffed out the rough spots. As a result, it will make for a tougher campaign this fall.

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas had the worst draft this year.

Neglecting to address its need for improving against the run, the Cowboys reached for Wisconsin offensive lineman Travis Frederick at the end of Round 1. Although he definitely helps bolster the ground attack, at least going with a guard such as Kentucky's Larry Warford or Alabama's Barrett Jones would have been a stronger pick—albeit still a reach.

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

Considering that Dallas gave up 4.5 yards per carry in 2012 and allowed 17 rushing touchdowns, not taking anyone along the defensive line will cost Big D in 2013. At the same time, a safety wasn't selected until Round 3 (J.J. Wilcox of Georgia Southern).

How will the Cowboys' 2013 regular season finish?

Wilcox certainly offers athletic potential, but his lack of experience on defense is not appealing. Regardless of his rookie impact, Dallas needed a dominant safety and could have snagged Florida's Matt Elam at No. 31 overall.

And an elite safety was required, because the Cowboys gave up 22 passing scores, a 62.6 completion percentage and logged just seven picks in 2012. On the bright side, giving Tony Romo an explosive receiver in Baylor's Terrance Williams will assist the offense.

That said, don't expect Dallas slowing anyone down, which means victories will have to come from higher-scoring affairs.

Indianapolis Colts

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Although the Colts enhanced their pass rush with Bjoern Werner, the guy is better suited as a 4-3 defensive end. His instincts for knocking down passes at the line will help, but Werner must quickly develop some coverage talent, otherwise blocking schemes will easily isolate him at the line.

Elsewhere the Colts picked up Oregon safety John Boyett in Round 6. Despite this addressing a pass defense need, opting for a dynamic player in Syracuse's Shamarko Thomas or Fresno State's Philip Thomas much earlier would have paid quicker dividends.

Are the Colts Super Bowl contenders?

Offensively, Indianapolis did give some depth to the line in Illinois' Hugh Thorton and USC's Khalid Holmes. Andrew Luck was sacked 41 times a year ago and the Colts averaged just 3.8 yards per rush.

That said, going with stronger interior offensive line prospects on Day 2 such as California's Brian Schwenke or Barrett Jones would have helped more. Schwenke faced more athletic defenses than Thorton and Jones is much more versatile than Holmes.

The Colts did themselves a favor by obviously drafting to patch up the weak spots. But Indy could have gotten the best of both worlds with Thomas in Round 2 and Jones in Round 3.

New York Jets

The future under center for the Jets is with Geno Smith.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

His strong arm, accuracy and decision-making will benefit the receivers for an improved passing game. Unfortunately, Gang Green did not address the rushing attack.

The running back position was rather deep for Day 2 and early in Day 3, but New York opted for interior offensive line and then Wake Forest fullback Tommy Bohanon in Round 7.

When will the Jets return to the postseason?

Drafting at least one ball-carrier between Rounds 3 through 6 would have been extremely beneficial to a struggling offense. Physical backs like Marcus Lattimore, Stepfan Taylor and Knile Davis were available when Gang Green selected in the third round.

Even when picking in Round 5 New York had the opportunity for Zac Stacy or Mike Gillislee.

Instead, the Jets avoided upgrading its pass rush or ground game, which was the team's strong points in 2009 and 2010. Without question Dee Milliner and Sheldon Richardson will make a fast and reliable impact, but don't expect much from the Jets offense this season.
