NFL Draft Grades 2013: Evaluations for Every Team's Overall Performance

John RozumJun 2, 2018

The 2013 NFL draft will have a significant impact on the upcoming regular season.

And for as obvious as that sounds, it's important to consider that all draft picks are capable of contributing—not just the top Round 1 selections.

Florida Atlantic running back Alfred Morris was a prime example of that last season.

Going in Round 6, Morris ended up as the NFL's second-leading rusher. His contributions were so great, the Washington Redskins reached the postseason and won the NFC East.

Morris' instant impact for coach Mike Shanahan and Co. is the reason why each draft pick matters. Here are full draft grades for 2013, as well as highlighted teams for specific analysis.

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia's first pick of Lane Johnson was ideal for coach Chip Kelly's offense.

Johnson, for one, fills a dire need regarding the pass protection, but he's also extremely athletic. At the combine, he clocked 4.72 seconds on the 40-yard dash, leaped to 34 inches on the vertical jump and hit 4.52 seconds on the 20-yard shuttle.

Mesh that incredible movement with Kelly's philosophy, and the Eagles got the exact type of player they needed. As the draft progressed, Philadelphia continued to help itself out with Stanford tight end Zach Ertz, North Carolina State safety Earl Wolff and Oregon State corner Jordan Poyer.

Ertz possesses valuable athleticism, as evidence of 898 receiving yards on 69 receptions and six scores last season. His complete skill set helps the intermediate passing game and he is also a strong run-blocker.

Defensively, Wolff and Poyer will complement one another quite well in the secondary.

Given that the Eagles gave up 33 passing scores and recorded only eight picks in 2012, secondary help was needed. Wolff is a reliable tackler (224 tackles the past two years) and Poyer will constantly make plays on the ball (30 defended passes between 2011 and 2012).

Denver Broncos

The Broncos didn't have an overly dominant draft, but they addressed needs with some solid selections.

Denver was quite fortunate to get Sylvester Williams at the back end of Round 1. Williams was a beast defensive tackle for North Carolina who possessed top-15 talent. His interior presence at wreaking havoc behind the line (20.5 tackles for loss) will be a great complement to Derek Wolfe along the line of scrimmage.

Thereafter, Denver landed Wisconsin's Montee Ball. Ball is a complete back and has the entire skill set—rushing, receiving, pass-blocking—to immediately start as an every-down contributor.

Two other defensive players that went largely overlooked by other teams were South Florida's Kayvon Webster and Western Kentucky's Quanterus Smith. Webster is the future in the secondary because he is a complete playmaker with a wide range of field awareness.

Smith is an immense boost to the front line next to Williams, as he accounted for 40 tackles for loss from 2010 through 2012.

St. Louis Rams

St. Louis ended up with one outstanding set of picks.

Offensively, the Rams added a pair of West Virginia receivers in Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey to drastically enhance the explosiveness in the passing game. Each will rack up great yards after the catch, not to mention defeat single coverage to keep linebackers and safeties occupied.

As a result, St. Louis establishes great balance in the defensively tough NFC West. Factor two SEC selections in Alabama lineman Barrett Jones and Vanderbilt back Zac Stacy, and the Rams will control the line up front.

Jones' versatility along the line will be an advantage when making in-game adjustments. Stacy, on the other hand, was a late-rounder with starting potential. He's a complete ball-carrier and had amassed 2,645 total yards (24 scores) the past two campaigns.

Switching to defense, St. Louis made an excellent acquisition with Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree. With his dynamic talent, he can play anywhere at the second level and contribute from rushing to sinking in coverage or simply reading against the run.

Elsewhere, the Rams addressed the secondary. USC's T.J. McDonald is a risk in Round 3 because he must develop better wrap-up skills when tackling. Miami's Brandon McGee won't see the field at corner—because of Cortland Finnegan and Janoris Jenkins—but is capable of helping as a nickel/dime back.
