NFL MOCK DRAFT 2009: SECOND ROUND

Second round picks can be just as valuable as first round picks. This is a chance for a team to add depth and find starters.
There is value in the second round. Some first round projections fall and teams get steals. Here is my second round. If I was picking for the teams, this is who I would take.
1(33). Detroit Lions-Eben Britton-OL-Arizona
Britton is a beast at 6'6" and 310 pounds.
The guy is big and can be good for the Lions, who could really used someone to block for any and everyone in the backfield.
Everything starts up front in football. The sooner Detroit learns that the better.
2(34). New England Patriots (from Cheifs)-Alphonso Smith-CB-Wake Forest
The Patriots need to realize that their defense is getting older.
They just brought in Shawn Springs, who isn't exactly young. Smith can develop behind veterans and give them a player for the future.
3(35). St. Louis Rams-Brian Robiskie-WR-Ohio State
The Rams need to replace Tory Holt.
They also need a quarterback. There is no quarterback worth taking until the third round at this point, but Robiskie is a player with stock rising like crazy. At 6'3", he is quick, with catching ability.
4(36). Cleveland Browns-Everette Brown-LB-Florida State
The Browns get a chance to build up their defense after taking a pick to help their offense in the first round.
Brown is a good pick in the second round. At 6'4"and 252 lb., it's just a question of whether he'll play DE or LB.
5(37). Seattle Seahawks-Donald Brown-RB-UConn
Seattle needs to find a starting running back after their flop with Julius Jones last season.
They have their chance here.
I think that Brown can be a good player for years to come for the Seahawks.
6(38). Cincinatti Bengals-Tyson Jackson-DE-LSU
The Bengals need more defense. They also need to build up the line on both sides of the ball. They can do both here with Jackson. He is a good player who can become a starter, maybe not a star, but a starter.
7(39). Jacksonville Jaguars-Kenny Britt-WR-Rutgers
The Jags like big receivers. They just picked up Tory Holt. Holt has some left but probably not a ton.
Their best receiver last year was Matt Jones, who is not great and is now gone. They need to help Garrard, if he is ever going to be a good consistent quarterback.
8(40). Oakland Raiders-Duke Robinson-OL-Oklahoma
Robinson is huge at 6'5" and 335 lb. Al Davis will love him. He is a good ballplayer and can help block for the tons of money in the back field for the Raiders, so it's not a bad pick here.
9(41). Green Bay Packers-Jamon Meredith-OL-South Carolina
Meredith is a tall athletic lineman who can help the Packers open holes in the running game and keep Aaron Rodgers healthy.
Meredith can help this good Packers offense get great.
10(42). Buffalo Bills-James Laurinaitis-LB-Ohio State
James Laurinaitis was the player to watch at the start of the season. His stock dropped dramatically.
He can still be a good player, and a great pick up for the Bills.
This is a player with first round potential, who underachieved in his last year in college. He could be good for Buffalo.
11(43). San Francisco 49ers-Larry English-DE-Norther Illinois
Larry English is another hybrid DE/LB is this draft.
The Niners have a good linebacking crew but not a great D-line.
This kid can give that a boost and help Singletary build up his defense.
12(44). Miami Dolphins (from Redskins)-Michael Johnson-DE-Georgia Tech
The Dolphins are building a team. This pick can give them a good pass rusher to help what Bill Parcells is doing in Miami. He is a good pick at this point in the second round.
13(45). New York Giants (from Saints)-Clint Sintim-LB-Virginia
Kiwanuka is a DE once again, and the Giants picked up Chris Canty.
Their D-Line is incredible. Their linebacking corp could use, if nothing else, a little depth.
Clint Sintim is an athletic linebacker who can help out on defense for the Giants...you know...if they weren't good enough already.
14(46). Houston Texans-Sean Smith-DB-Utah
Sean Smith was impressive last season, really impressive.
The Texans could use some more talent and youth in the secondary.
The great thing about this kid is once you get him on your team, you get to figure out whether to play him at corner or safety.
15(47). New England Patriots (from Chargers)-Connor Barwin-LB/DE/TE?-Cincinatti
The Pats have a million picks in the draft this year.
This is their second of three in the second round. This is good for the Pats since they're older than they used to be.
Connor Barwin is a Belichick guy. He started his career as a tight end, moved to defense, can play DE and LB.
He'll probably play defensive end, but we have all seen how the Pats like to play their defenders as receivers on the goal line.
This guy is perfect for what the Patriots do.
16(48). Denver Broncos-Patrick Chung-S-Oregon
The Broncos need to get younger players in their secondary.
Champ Bailey is great, but he is older every season. They picked up Brian Dawkings (35) and Reynaldo Hill (30).
This is a player that the Broncos can develop and bring along to be a starter down the road.
17(49). Chicago Bears-Ramses Barden-WR-Cal Poly
The Bears got Jay Cutler. They're hoping Cutler can turn Hester into the deep threat they've been hoping for.
This seems possible after the vast improvement he showed in his second year as an NFL receiver. At 6'6" and 227 lb., Barden is a big strong receiver who catches everything.
He can fill the void that was left with the departure of Muhsin Muhammad.
18(50). Cleveland Browns (from Bucaneers)-LeSean McCoy-RB-Pittsburgh
Jamal Lewis has been really good for the Browns, but how much longer can he be good?
Lewis is closing on thirty, and he doesn't have the explosiveness that he did at the start of his career.
He could benefit from having another back to split carries with. McCoy played well at Pitt and can be a good number two behind Lewis here.
19(51). Dallas Cowboys-William Moore-S-Missouri
The Cowboys had a good draft last year. Two quality running backs and two quality corner backs.
The play of their saftys is still lacking, however.
They brought in Gerald Sensabaugh who isn't really an upgrade or downgrade from what Roy Williams has brought to the table the last few seasons.
They can get a speedy, athletic safety with the potential to become a real playmaker here. Moore's stock has dropped a bit, giving the Cowboys a quality late first pick.
20(52). New York Jets-Juaquin Iglesias-WR-Oklahoma
A 6'0" receiver with a respectable forty time that the Jets hope can fill in for Coles, whose departure hurts a team who has no quarterback to speak of.
Iglesias is a second round pick all the way, so taking him here isn't bad for New York.
21(53). Philidelphia Eagles-Jared Cook-TE-South Carolina
The Eagles lost L.J. Smith. They need a tight end to replace him. Jared Cook is a 6'5", 240 pound tight end who has impressed in the offseason and is a great second round pick for Philly.
22(54). Minnesota Vikings-Sen'Derrick Marks-DL-Auburn
The Vikings are looking to add depth.
If the Williams get injured, they don't have much to back them up.
Marks stock has dropped, but he is still a big SEC defensive lineman, which is good enough at this pick.
23(55). Atlanta Falcons-Rashad Johnson-S-Alabama
Johnson wasn't big coming out of high school, but that changed in college.
Johnson has been a starter at Alabama for two years and was a big part of the great defense we saw last season.
The Falcons need some secondary help, and this guy has the potential to be very good.
24(56). Miami Dolphins-Derrick Williams-WR-Penn State
The Dolphins could use a little help in the passing game.
Williams played running back and wide receiver in college, and has quietly started to look like a good WR prospect for the NFL.
He seems like a guy who would fit in with all the different packages the Dolphins seem to like to do. Williams ran a respectable forty time and can be a guy to watch out for.
25(57). Baltimore Raves-Shawn Nelson-TE-Southern Miss
The Ravens want to win as soon as possible, so they need to boost up their offense a bit.
Todd Heap is good but injury prone. This guy can be another weapon to help a very young quarterback, who showed promise in his rookie year get better.
26(58). New England Patriots-William Beatty-OT-UConn
The Pats used their first three picks to prepare the future of their defense.
Now they want to add depth and youth to their offensive line.
This kid is not a starter right now but shows potential, which is all the Pats need from him.
He is 6'6" and over 300 pounds and can learn from one of the best lines in football.
27(59). Carolina Panthers-Jarron Gilbert-DL-San Jose State
Julius Peppers wants out. Carolina is holding on as long as they can, which seems to be this one last season. Peppers is the kind of player who will play hard as long as he is there.
Gilbert has seen his stock rise in the offseason. The Panthers don't need this kid to start this year. They need him to watch everything Peppers does and hope that he can be a good replacement.
28(60). New York Giants-Shonn Greene-RB-Iowa
I like this kid a lot. He was the only running back to go over a hundred yards in every game running the ball in college last year.
He has the potential to be great. The Giants aren't desperate for a running back, but they aren't desperate for anything.
Jacobs is going to be injured at some point this year. Derrick Ward is gone. This guy can help the Giants keep earth, wind, and fire going.
29(61). Indianapolis Colts-Phil Loadholt-OL-Oklahoma
Loadholt is huge—6'8" 337. The Colts are going to pick him up and groom him for the future.
They could also use a little depth. This guy has seen his stock drop, but a guy this big with a pretty good skill set can't be passed on this late in the second round.
30(62). Tennessee Titans-Louis Murphy-WR-Florida
The Titans are going to think about a defensive tackle here, but not long.
Jason Jones was drafted last year with Tennessee with the knowledge that Haynesworth may leave. Jones filled in well for Albert when he was injured and helped the Titans beat the Steelers, and Tony Brown can be a decent back up for Jones.
The Titans signed Nate Washington in the offseason, but they still seemed to want Tory Holt.
This guy could be a good pick up for Tennessee. He is 6'2", 205 lb., and running a fast forty time, this kid could be explosive.
31(63). Arizona Cardinals-Marcus Freeman-LB-Ohio State
The Cardinals need more Defense. You don't have a lot of great choices as far as linebackers go at this point, but that is what you need.
Freeman was a bit overlooked in college, but there aren't any backers left that are any better at this point. The Cardinals take their chances here with this Ohio State linebacker.
32(64). Pittsburgh Steelers-Eric Wood-OL-Louisville
Once again, the Steelers don't really need anything, but they still have draft picks.
They want to add depth to an already great team. The kid is 6'4" and over 300 pounds.
The great thing is that he can play all over the line and can step in wherever he is needed. Not a flashy pick, but a solid one.
Quarterbacks
The next three slides are just a couple of second day quarterback picks I find interesting.
Pat White-Third Round-Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jags became a lot less sure about Garrard last season.
They have no kind of back up—Cleo Lemon is not kind of back up—if Garrard goes down.
Pat White wants to be a quarterback, and he has impressed a lot of people in the offseason.
The Jags are going to take a chance on this kid in the third, and who knows, he may be able to do something.
Graham Harrell-Fifth Round-Tennessee Titans
The kid has gotten no love from experts and scouts, but he was nothing short of a stud in college.
In 2006, he passed for 4555 and 38 touchdowns.
In 2007, he passed for 5705 and 48 touchdowns.
In 2008, he passed for 5111 and 45 touchdowns.
Numbers don't lie. The kid doesn't have a stellar arm, but he is probably the most accurate passer coming out this season.
We all know how disappointing Vince Young has been, so Fisher is going to get this guy late and see if he can develop him into a starter, while Kerry Collins is still on contract for the next two seasons.
Chase Daniel-Sixth Round-Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys want a younger back-up for Tony Romo.
How about a guy who is about the same height, with about the same ability to move around and make plays with his legs?
The guy looks a lot like Romo when he plays and should fit the Cowboys system about perfect.
The guy isn't expected to be any kind of starter, but he could turn into a good back-up on the Dallas roster, after Kitna's contract expires.
