Darrelle Revis Says It Would Be Awesome to Play for San Francisco 49ers
For Revis, the thought is exciting, as he told Michael Robinson on "The Real Rob Report" on Monday (via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News):
“You got to tip your hat off to them to what they did last this past year,” Revis said of the 49ers. “This is a team with a great coach—(Jim) Harbaugh—and great players on their team. They did it without me last year. So, for me, looking at their roster and their team, I would just be an addition to help them win that trophy. Would it be awesome? I mean, yeah.”
“My main goal as a player—and I think all of us as players in the NFL—is to hold that Lombardi Trophy up in the air and wear that ring,” Revis added. “They are definitely a contender and they will be a contender for the next couple years… That’s a great conference… and we’ll see. My representatives are going to do the best job they can for me… whether I stay a New York Jet or whether I have to move on somewhere else.”
Here's the first part of that interview:
So how exactly did we get to the point where Revis is openly addressing the prospect of playing for the 49ers?
It's no secret that Revis wants a long-term extension after his current deal runs out after the 2013 season. It's also no secret that he's coming off an ACL tear and most teams would be wary to make a huge commitment until they see him in action again, including the Jets.
But things got really interesting at the NFL Scouting Combine, when Gary Myers of the New York Daily News reported that Jets general manager John Idzik was shopping his star corner at the annual event.
Not long after, the Niners traded Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, leaving San Francisco with 15 picks in this year's draft, including the No. 31 and No. 34 picks (the latter from Kansas City).
The speculation began.
The Niners were loaded with picks. The Niners needed to upgrade at cornerback. The Jets were reportedly shopping Revis, who would make the 49ers defense truly scary. This all made a little too much sense.
Should the Niners trade for Revis?
The speculation soon turned into a legitimate rumor, when Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported the following: "The 49ers are among a handful of teams that have discussed making a run at Revis this offseason, according to two sources. In fact, the 49ers are poised to make a run at Revis even if it's just for one season (although that could be problematic from Revis' standpoint)."
And that's how we got here.
The potential marriage between Revis and the Niners makes a ton of sense. The Niners have an established roster, and the goal should be to win a Super Bowl in the next three years. Adding Revis, the top corner in the game, would seriously improve the team's odds.
