Investigate Bud Selig, Not Barry Bonds
John FalcettaJul 21, 2007
The last few days have said it all about the tenure of MLB Commissioner Bud Selig.Old Bud has long been an empty suitโand those are the nicest words I can use. Now, though, he's really dropping the ball.
Selig is nothing if not a shady character. How does one own a team and hold the Commissioner's Office without a conflict of interest?

And what about steroids? The best case scenario is that Bud and Co. were oblivious to the Steroid Era. A darker possibility is that they turned a blind eye and lined their pockets. And the worst version of all is that they not only knew but encouraged the 'roid freaks to keep pumping out the homers.
I'll bet on the latter.
The owners of the 1990s had every incentive to encourage fan-friendly power displays; remember, they needed a financial boost after the strike of 1994.
Selig, for one, made huge profits in 1998 whenever Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire came to Milwaukee. I lived in Chicago that summer and made the drive four times myselfโthree times to catch the Cubs and once to see the Big Red Juicer.
Those games, by the way, were the Brewers' only sellouts of the season.
And who walked away with the proceeds?
That's right: our self-righteous Commish.
Now our beloved Bud is conducting an investigation with the help of former Senator George Mitchell, also known as the Barry Bonds Witch Hunt. If the investigation were for real, though, the first man in the hot seat would be Selig himself.
And the second would be George W. Bush.
After all, W. was the owner of the Texas Rangers when their lineup boasted the Three 'Roid Amigos: Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro, and Juan Gonzalez. Jose's steroid use was public knowledge as far back as the '88 ALCS, when Red Sox fans first busted out the "Steroids" chant. And still Bush, and the rest of baseball, saw fit to keep raking in the ticket proceeds.
As it stands, the Mitchell investigation has all the credibility of the WWE drug testing program.
The latest news is that the term of the federal grand jury investigating Bonds has been extended againโa colossal waste of taxpayer money. (When did Bonds take priority over Osama Bin Laden, by the way?) I say the real culprits here are the men, the owners and the Commishโwho struck it richย and now want to play high and mighty.
Sorry boys: too little, too late.
Bud, you're the worst commissioner since Kenesaw "No blacks allowed " Landis. If you really want the truth to come out, you should testify yourself.
We fans deserve that much.
