Santonio Holmes Injury: Major News as Jets Receiver Is Likely out for the Year

Adam WaksmanOct 2, 2012

It was reported early Wednesday morning (via the Associated Press) that New York Jets receiver Santonio Holmes has been diagnosed with a Lisfranc injury in his foot. This most likely means that Holmes will be gone for the rest of the season.

This news comes on the heels of the loss of their best defensive and overall player—Darrelle Revis—with an ACL tear. Now the Jets will also spend the season without their most explosive offensive player.

A Lisfranc injury occurs when metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus in the foot. This usually involves a significant ligament tear and often small bone fractures as well.

The tear most commonly occurs in the ligament that holds the first two toes in the foot together. However, the precise details of Holmes' injury have not yet been released.

His X-rays initially came up negative for bone fractures. His MRI had to be studied by multiple doctors before he could be diagnosed.

Holmes currently leads the Jets with 20 catches in four weeks this season. The Jets' two best receivers behind him—rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill and tight end Dustin Keller—are both recovering from hamstring injuries and hope to be ready to play this coming Monday.

If neither of those two players are ready to go, then the outlook is bleak for the Jets on Monday night against the 4-0 Houston Texans.

Regardless, the loss of Santonio Holmes—the Super Bowl XLIII MVP and the Jets' best receiver for the past three seasons—is a major blow to a team already dealing with a plethora of injuries.
