The Packers defense came up big in last Thursday’s 23-10 win over the Bears. The “D” had seven sacks and four interceptions in the win, giving the franchise its third game in history where they had seven sacks and four interceptions in a game.
The other two games where the Packers defense had seven sacks and four interceptions:
September 24, 1978 vs. San Diego: Packers had eight sacks and five interceptions in 24-3 win.
October 23, 1966 vs. Atlanta: Packers had eight sacks and four interceptions in 56-3 win.
Let’s break down the numbers; first the seven sacks and then the four interceptions.
Sacks. This was the 26th game in team history where they had seven or more sacks in a game. This is the first time since 2004 where they had seven or more sacks in a game; ironically the last time it happened was also against the Bears (January 2, 2005) when they had nine sacks. That game in 2005 tied the club record of nine, which had occurred twice before (November 1, 1998 against the 49ers and October 24 versus Dallas). In the 26 games where the Pack had seven or more sacks they have won 24 of those 26 games. The two losses came in 2004 in an overtime loss to the Eagles, and in 1951 when they lost to San Francisco.
Interceptions. This was the 102nd game in team history where the Packers had four or more interceptions in a game. It happened once last year (December 11 against the Raiders). The team record is nine interceptions in a game, which happened in 1943 in a game against Detroit. In games where the Packers had four or more interceptions, the team is 88-13-1 (an 86.8 winning percentage). The last time the club lost a game where they had four or more interceptions was in 1988.
The seven-sack, four interception game by the Packers was the 52nd in NFL history and the first such game since 2002 when the Falcons had eight sacks and four interceptions against Carolina. NFL teams are 49-2-1 (.952 winning percentage) in games where their defense has seven or more sacks and four or more interceptions in a game.
As mentioned above, this was the third game in Packers history where they had seven sacks and four interceptions. That is not the most number of games with those stats in the league. The Washington Redskins have five such games in their franchise history. The franchises with the most seven-sack, four-interception games:
4: Kansas City, New York Jets, Rams
3: Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota
