Chad Johnson has reportedly been charged with misdemeanor battery after he was arrested for allegedly headbutting his wife Evelyn Lozada on August 11, according to the state attorney for Broward County, Fla., via TMZ.com.
Johnson reportedly faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
The 34-year-old six-time Pro Bowler was dismissed from the Miami Dolphins after his arrest in August. After the incident Lozada filed for divorce, but Johnson has refused to sign the papers, per the TMZ report.
It's been an up-and-down career for Johnson, both on and off the field, but this has to be his low point. He caught just 15 passes for 276 yards and a touchdown last season with the New England Patriots and found himself kicked off a team with arguably the worst receiving corps in football this offseason.
One has to wonder if this is the final straw for Johnson, who had been a distraction with the Cincinnati Bengals even before he made his way to the Patriots and Dolphins. He only has to look at former Bengals teammate Terrell Owens, who was cut by the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, to know how hard it is to get a job in the NFL when you are an aging receiver with a history of being a handful.
If this truly is the end for Johnson, he leaves with three All-Pro selections and zero rings. There's no denying his ability when he's on the field and committed, but there have been questions about whether he cares more about himself than his team.
This is yet another example of a player with out-of-this-world athleticism who hasn't lived up to his ultimate potential.
