Redskins' Robert Griffin III Hit with NFL Heat over Nike Logo Cover-Up

The NFL would like a word with Robert Griffin III over the creative ink job he decorated his warm-up shirt with prior to the first game of his professional career. 

The Redskins quarterback is sponsored by Adidas, while the NFL is being outfitted by Nike, and those two facts mean everything when you consider this silly scandal. 

As SportsGrid reports, Griffin tried his best to be a loyal Adidas-donning soldier by trying to rub out the Nike logo on his practice shirt. At least, that's what it seems like. 

Sure, Griffin could argue he was just trying to invoke a tad more "heart" from himself before a game he straight-up dominated, throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns, but we know better. 

The overzealous "H" clearly covers the Nike swoosh, and for a company that pays millions to land on NFL apparel and a league that welcomes it on said wardrobe, this is a problem. 

ESPN's Darren Rovell reports RG3 may get a stern talking to about his use of a Sharpie over the famous logo, but don't expect it to go further than that:

Players are allowed to wear logos of shoe brands that endorse them as long as those brands have deals with the league. They are not, however, allowed to cover up the swoosh of Nike, which is in its first year of a five-year deal with the league.

Griffin won't likely be fined because the shirt was only visible before pregame warmups, but NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told ESPN.com that league officials would talk to him.

"It won't happen again," McCarthy said.

As SportsGrid and other sites note, this is better news than Nike could have hoped for. Here we are, reporting on a story that only serves to remind people that the NFL is now dressed by that specific sports apparel company. 

We would have never even seen the picture of RG3 wearing the white shirt complete with the famous swoosh had this controversy never happened. 

The star rookie will get a slap on the wrist and a brief scolding from NFL brass, and perhaps a reminder to write his messages on the other side of his T-shirt.
