Drafting in State for the Arizona Cardinals?

Ian ZymarakisSenior Analyst IMarch 15, 2008

When the Arizona Cardinals take the podium at the 2008 NFL Draft with the 16th overall pick many fans in Arizona know that the defense must be addressed, more importantly the Cornerback situation which is arguably the weakest part of the Cardinals defense.

One name that comes to mind is Antoine Cason, the U of A standout Cornerback who broke many university records during his tenure there.

Many people in Arizona know who this guy is, especially people that go to ASU including myself.

Sure Talib and Jenkins might be available there but Cason, although he is the #2 ranked Cornerback on Rivals.com; he seems to be relatively underrated when I see different Mock Drafts with Jenkins and Talib being taken higher then Cason.

Cason brings good speed with his size which is almost the exact same then that of Talib from Kansas.

People might scratch their heads if the Cardinals went in this direction but it definitely should be thought about I think.

Another sleeper pick in the later rounds could be Ryan Torrain from ASU, I think if the Cards do not address a back up running back within the first 3 rounds that Torrain would be a great pick in the later rounds, should he still be there.

Torrain would supply a great powerback with speed, his power would definitely come in handy in goal line situations which the Cardinals seemed to always be in during this past season.

Torrain definitely isnt a long term feature back but he would definitely fill a role that Brandon Jacobs did on the Giants before Tiki retired, leaving the feature back job to Jacobs this past season.

Another option could be to address the offensive line once again would be Center Mike Pollak from ASU.

Pollak could be one of the more underrated linemen in the draft, he is currently ranked as the #5 Center on Rivals.com, Pollak could definitely be taken in the 3rd round possibly and be a great backup or even challenge for a starting spot this coming season.

Other possibilities but ones that would be doubtful because of what other teams in the league will be looking for is Josh Barrett (ASU); the #2 ranked Strong Safety on Rivals.com, Robert James (ASU); #12 ranked Outside Linebacker on Rivals.com and Spencer Larson (UofA) #16 ranked Inside Linebacker on Rivals.com.

These guys are all quality players that could be instant upgrades to this Cardinals team.

One final sleeper from an Arizona University is Rudy Burgess from ASU, he plays almost everywhere asked, defense, offense and even special teams, that guy could be an instant addition to a Cardinals Wide Reciever core.

Who just happened to lose their #3 reciever in Bryant Johnson and doesnt have a solid #3 or even #4 in the depth chart.

Now I am sure there will be guys higher on the boards that the Cards take but I feel these instate guys would be great fits on a Cardinals team that could easily just look instate for instant talent.
