Predicting All 10 MLB Playoff Teams in the Post-Trade Deadline Landscape

Mark MillerJun 7, 2018

Now that we've all had a chance to catch our breath since the MLB trade deadline has come and gone, we get to see just how these pieces are able to meld into a functioning piece of a new team's chemistry.

From Zack Greinke to Hanley Ramirez, big-name players could be the difference between taking home field in the postseason or squaring off as a wild-card team.

Two months of baseball stand in our way of realizing exactly who ends up playing in October, but the early returns promise to give us some indications of things to come.

Which MLB 10 teams will be in the playoff picture? Read on for some predictions.

AL West Winner: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

1 of 10

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim entered the season as a favorite to take the AL West after their acquisitions of C.J. Wilson and Albert Pujols during the offseason.

Pujols got off to a dismal start, but appears to have found his swing and is once again poised to put up numbers that should be MVP-caliber.

Add to that the productivity from young guns like Mike Trout and the acquisition of Zack Greinke prior to the deadline, and the Angels look like the team to beat.

AL Central Winner: Chicago White Sox

2 of 10

When the Detroit Tigers plodded their way through the AL Central last season and put up a good fight toward the World Series last fall, you would've thought they'd be favorites once again in 2012.

The Chicago White Sox, however, have been the team to beat in the division this season. The Sox have put up impressive performance after impressive performance, and they play cohesively in all facets of the game.

Acquiring Kevin Youkilis from the Boston Red Sox earlier in the season bolstered their infield defense while adding depth to their lineup, and adding Brett Myers to the bullpen can only do good things toward the finish line.

AL East Winner: New York Yankees

3 of 10

By their standards, the New York Yankees remained relatively quiet at this year's trade deadline.

However, they're certainly no worse off, as they have one of baseball's best records and should once again do big things in the postseason.

They'll need to fight though some key injuries in the second half, as Mark Teixeira's wrist is the team's most recent concern. But if they can field a full team more often than not, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yankees fighting for a shot at a World Series berth.

AL Wild Card No. 1: Texas Rangers

4 of 10

After making two consecutive World Series appearances, the Texas Rangers definitely know a thing or two about how to make a stretch run.

They'll have their hands full in the AL West this fall, as the Los Angeles Angels boast a stacked roster and are playing like a team that could take it all.

Ryan Dempster may not have been the Texas Rangers' first choice when it came to adding an arm, but with Roy Oswalt moving to the bullpen since Neftali Feliz's season ended, Dempster's addition will help in the long run.

AL Wild Card No. 2: Detroit Tigers

5 of 10

With the reigning AL Cy Young winner and MVP in Justin Verlander heading up the Detroit Tigers rotation, the team seemingly would be an easy choice to take the AL Central.

Throw Prince Fielder into the mix, and it seemingly would be a no-brainer.

The team didn't get off to the best start, however, and with the Chicago White Sox playing well as of late, the Tigers will have work to do in key divisional games if they hope to move past a wild-card berth.

Acquisitions of Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante will certainly help add depth down the stretch, but it may not be enough to get past the Sox in the Central.

NL West Winner: Los Angeles Dodgers

6 of 10

There wasn't a more active team at the trade deadline this summer, as the Los Angeles Dodgers did a number of big things to bolster their roster and quite possibly make them the team to beat in the NL West.

Hanley Ramirez will perhaps make the biggest difference. The team's offense is now one of the most dangerous in the league with sluggers such as Matt Kemp on board, and with Shane Victorino adding outfield depth, the team has a lot fewer holes than it did a month ago.

NL Central Winner: Cincinnati Reds

7 of 10

The Cincinnati Reds made their biggest move to the 2012 roster this past winter when they sent a number of prospects to San Diego in exchange for ace Mat Latos.

He's been a big part of the team's ascent to the top of the NL Central, and though the team didn't pull the trigger on players like Denard Span or Shane Victorino, their pitching staff should help carry them to a division title and another postseason appearance.

NL East Winner: Washington Nationals

8 of 10

It's hard to think of a better story in baseball than the Washington Nationals, who hold the lead in the NL East and have a couple of the game's best young players in Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg.

They'll need to fight off a feisty Atlanta Braves team that is just a few games back right now, but with pitchers like Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez toeing the rubber, the rest of their pieces should fall into place.

NL Wild Card No. 1: San Francisco Giants

9 of 10

The Philadelphia Phillies' loss may very well end up being the San Francisco Giants' gain. Hunter Pence became one of the most coveted position players on the market this summer until he ultimately found a home by the Bay.

The Giants will have to contend with the rival Dodgers, who also have been extremely active this summer, for the NL West. But even if San Francisco doesn't end up atop the division when the regular season ends, it should be primed for a postseason appearance and has the tools to go deep.

NL Wild Card No. 2: Pittsburgh Pirates

10 of 10

It's been nearly two decades since the Pittsburgh Pirates made a trip to the postseason, so it's hard to keep from rooting for them as the final two months of the season get underway.

They did a good job of bolstering their rotation when they traded for A.J. Burnett, and they took it even further prior to the deadline when they acquired Wandy Rodriguez from the Astros.

With Andrew McCutchen leading the way on offense, the Pirates are another team that can't be ignored when October baseball comes into play.
