Vontaze Burfict: Former ASU Star Reportedly Failed Drug Test Prior to NFL Draft

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

Vontaze Burfict was originally considered a first-round prospect by many, but the NFL draft stock of the Arizona State linebacker has plummeted in recent weeks.

It doesn't appear that he will be able to rebound either, as NFL insider Jay Glazer is reporting that teams have been informed that Burfict failed a drug test.

Burfict—along with Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley—is the latest in a long line of prospects who have tested positive. Burfict had already fallen out of first-round consideration due to character concerns and a poor showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, and this latest strike against him will only make things worse.

While some teams don't take failed drug tests into consideration as much as others, Burfict was already a falling star in the eyes of most. He has immense talent and an NFL body, but he didn't always produce the way he should have for the Sun Devils, and he often made mental errors that cost his team.

With all of that said, Burfict may now be in danger of being taken no earlier than Day 3 of the draft, and there is even the possibility that he goes undrafted altogether. Many teams place a huge focus on character, and when you consider this positive drug test and numerous temperamental outbursts on the field, some teams have probably completely removed Burfict's name from their respective draft boards.

Any player who decides to use drugs knowing full well that they are subjected to tests ahead of the draft has to be called into question.

Burfict apparently didn't think that he would get caught, so now he'll have to pay the price by potentially missing out on millions of dollars.
