2012 NFL Draft: 7 Players Who Could Help Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos

David LevinJun 1, 2018

It may have been the most uneven season a starting quarterback ever had in the NFL for Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos.

The team went through growing pains like no other franchise which included nail-biting wins, catastrophic loses and a playoff run that ended on a cold evening in New England.

The wins and the loses exposed the team, showing areas of the lineup that need attention, but the defense was better than advertised and the offense was at times solid when spearheaded by a strong running game.

Demaryius Thomas had a strong year and throwback slot man Eric Decker was able to pick up key yards in clutch situations.

Still, this is a team that needs to fill holes and work on becoming a more consistent unit on both sides of the ball if Denver (9-9 on the season, including the playoffs) is to advance farther in the playoffs in 2012.

Here is a look at some of the players in the upcoming draft who could help the offensive side of the ball make improvements to a team on the rise.

Kendall Wright, Wide Receiver, Baylor

1 of 7

Wright will be available when the Broncos make their first selection and his speed may be a great compliment to the size and speed of Demaryius Thomas.

Wright's biggest endorsement in this draft is that he was on the receiving end of many passes thrown by Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

He may not be as tall (5'10") as say an Alshon Jeffery or Michael Floyd but in the Broncos passing game that looked very erratic at times last season, Tim Tebow needs another underneath slot guy he can depend on to bail him out when he scrambles out of the pocket on a busted play or two...or three.

Cordy Glenn, Guard, Georgia

2 of 7

The Broncos learned how important their offensive line was when Chris Kuper went down with a leg injury.

Kuper broke his leg in the season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs and while it was not the season-ending injury that plagued this team, it did mean that one of the team's best linemen would be missed.

Solid, dependable depth on the offensive line is always a good thing.

Glenn is a huge specimen. At 6'5" and 348 pounds, he can maul defenders with the best of them and provide a strong push in the running game.

Since the Broncos are a run-first team, having more depth and size up front is always key to their success.

Dwayne Allen, Tight End, Clemson

3 of 7

You can never have too many tight ends on a team that depends so heavily on the run game.

And you can never have too many tight ends that can catch the ball over the middle.

Allen is ranked as the top tight end prospect in this draft. He is a nice size target at 6'4" and 255 pounds and has nice speed (4.76) for his size.

Teaching Tebow to stand in the pocket and allow his tight end or safety valve to become open will help him ease into better pocket presence and the need to let everything come to him.

David Wilson, Running Back, Virginia Tech

4 of 7

Denver has never been a team to shy away from drafting good, dependable running backs in the draft.

While Knowshown Moreno will be back and the team already has Willis McGahee who ran for 1,199 yards, this is a team that could still take a runner because of the style of running game the Broncos use.

While Tim Tebow ran for 660 yards in the regular season, I think there will be a drop off in his carries next season while he concentrates on being a better passer.

Wilson has good speed and size (5'10", 205 pounds) and runs a 4.42 40-yard sprint.

Alshon Jeffery, Wide Receiver, South Carolina

5 of 7

I personally do not think Jeffery has lost as much of his "mojo" as many of the draft boards think.

While he played against some of the best defenses in the SEC, he also had to adjust to a new quarterback in midseason.

That is enough to change a receiver's outlook with NFL scouts.

Jeffery is big (6'4") and provides Tebow (or anyone else playing quarterback on this team) a big end-zone target.

If teams start a run on receivers (and they always do), the Broncos may have to go up and trade spaces to get this type of pass catcher.

Peter Konz, Center, Wisconsin

6 of 7

Konz is a nice talent from Wisconsin who would be drafted to play center, but could see time at guard as well.

I see him as a Jeff Faine-type player who gets the job done, doing the dirty work in the trenches.

What Konz does is provide solid depth and growth. That is all you can ask for with players of his size (6'5" and 315 pounds).

Big 10 offensive linemen are usually hard to move at the point of attack. The Broncos hope that holds true so more holes can be opened for the Broncos running game.

Michael Floyd, Wide Receiver, Notre Dame

7 of 7

At 6'3" and 229 pounds, Floyd may be the perfect fit to this offense for Tebow and company.

Floyd is thick and runs precise routes and can play in the slot or on the outside and does not have to become the top receiver on the team coming out of the draft. This could be something he grows into.

What I like about Floyd is that he played four years in a college system and while he did not catch everything that was thrown to him, he will still have the discipline to learn a new system and fit into the Broncos passing game.

The idea of Tebow, Thomas and Floyd working together means the Broncos passing game could be good for a nice, long stretch.
