Philadelphia Eagles: 10 Reasons Why the Eagles Will Win the Super Bowl

Eddie RavertDec 18, 2011

It may seem extremely far fetched, but here me out before you write this team off.  The Philadelphia Eagles have finally found their mojo, and they aren't looking back now.  The Eagles are now 6-8 and have a very reasonable chance of making the playoffs by winning the NFC East.

All this team needs to do is make it to the playoffs, and they will show teams why Vince Young regarded them as the Dream Team.

Here is what needs to happen for the Eagles to make the playoffs:

-They must win their last two games

-The New York Jets have to beat the New York Giants. Then, the Giants have to beat the Dallas Cowboys in week 17

-The Eagles have to beat the Cowboys and pray to Giants can beat the Cowboys.

That would put the Eagles at a 8-8 overall record and a 5-1 record in the NFC East.  Once the Eagles get into the playoffs, the ball is in their court.

Continue reading to see why the Philadelphia Eagles will not only win the NFC East, but also the Super Bowl.

No. 10: This Has Been a Crazy Year in the NFL

1 of 10

If you asked anyone what would happen this year in the NFL, I highly doubt they would be able to explain how the Indianapolis Colts have won only one game to date.  I also doubt they would say Tim Tebow would lead the Denver Broncos to six fourth-quarter comeback victories.  Could you say the week after the Kansas City Chiefs fire their head coach, they would ruin the Green Bay Packers' perfect season?

Catch my drift?

There have been a number of extraordinary circumstances to this 2011 NFL season, so why is the Eagles winning the Super Bowl so much different?

Did you think the Buffalo Bills would beat the New England Patriots early in the year?

Did you think the Detroit Lions would be as good as they are?

Did you think Jim Harbaugh would have this much of an impact on the San Francisco 49ers?

If the Eagles can get into the playoffs, anything can happen.  This has been anything other than an ordinary season in the NFL.  Now that the Birds are showing signs of life, they could be a very dangerous team come playoff time.

No. 9: Tony Romo Is Terrible in December

2 of 10

The numbers speak for themselves.  Tony Romo has a career record of 6-10 in the month of December.  This is the most crucial month of the NFL season, and the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys can't seem to handle the pressure.

In addition to having a losing record in December, Romo has been sacked twice as much in December than in the first couple months of the season (his offensive line can also be blamed for this).  He also turns the ball over twice as much in the month of December.

Also, not including the three games this December, Romo averages one-and-a-half interceptions and 25 turnovers in December games.

The Eagles won the first contest of the season against the Cowboys 34-7.  That was with an ailing defense and immature wide receiving group.  Although Romo had a decent game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they do not have as strong a defense as the recently gelled Eagles do.

The Eagles will take on the Cowboys on Christmas Eve in Dallas, and the Cowboys will be without their star running back, Demarco Murray.  He proved to be the one trouble for the Eagles. Now that he is out, Philadelphia and their improving defense should hold up just fine against America's Team.

No. 8: The Jets Are Going to Come out Strong After an Embarrassing Loss

3 of 10

On Saturday, Christmas Eve, The Jets will take on the Giants in a New York City rivalry.  This game means everything for the Eagles.

In order for the Eagles to make the playoffs, they need the Giants to lose one of their remaining two games.  However, the Eagles also need the Cowboys to lose their next two games (which are against the Eagles and Giants).

Still with me?

Anyway, the Eagles need the Giants to lose to the Jets, and then beat the Cowboys.

Why will the Jets beat the Giants?  Because they are just coming off an embarrassing 45-19 loss to another NFC foe, the Philadelphia Eagles.  You can bet that Rex Ryan will not put up with another poor performance from his team.  He will undoubtedly have his team prepared to beat the Giants this weekend.

Also, the Giants looked sluggish as ever against the Washington Redskins.  Not one player showed up, and it seems as if they quit on Tom Coughlin.

Who will win in the battle of New York?  One thing can be sure, Eagles fans are hoping it's the team they just demolished.

No. 7: The Giants Will Beat the Cowboys

4 of 10

Assuming all goes to plan for the Eagles, during Week 17 play, they will be the biggest New York Giants fans in the world.  If up to this point the Eagles took care of business in Dallas and the Jets beat the Giants, then all that needs to happen is for the Eagles to beat the Redskins and Giants to beat the Cowboys.

If all this happens, the Philadelphia Eagles are your NFC East champions.  Just like that.

Why will the Giants beat the Cowboys?  For starters, the game is at MetLife Stadium, so it is a home game for the Giants.  Also, when these two teams met earlier in December, the Giants won in a close one, 37-34 where Eli Manning had 400 passing yards.

They will be coming off a tough loss to the Jets and will want revenge against a division opponent.

Who better to take their anger out on than the Dallas Cowboys?

No. 6: Eagles Are Healthy

5 of 10

For the first time all season, the Philadelphia Eagles are mostly healthy.  Mike Vick has been looking sharp.  Although he took a couple brutal hits against, the Jets he seems to be fine.

Jeremy Maclin, Nate Allen, Nnamdi Asomugha and Todd Herremans all played against the Jets, and they all looked to be 100 percent, or as close to 100 percent you can get at this point in the season.

The only injury that may be probable to the Eagles is the strained hamstring Asante Samuel suffered against the Jets.  Head coach Andy Reid said Samuel will have an MRI on Monday.

If Samuel's injury is only minuscule, then the Eagles should have all their key players for their next two games and the playoffs.

No. 5: The Defense Finally Showed Up

6 of 10

In an interview after the victory over the New York Jets, Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said that his players finally had the base system down, and they can now add some more involved packages into the mix.

I don't know who has taken more heat this season, Andy Reid or Juan Castillo.  In any matter, Castillo's defense has been dynamite in the past two games.

Jason Babin has been a sack machine for the Eagles.  He is just three shy of the great Reggie White's season sack record for the Eagles of 21.

Part of Babin's success is that counterpart defensive end Trent Cole attracts so much attention that teams forget how lethal Babin can be.

The play of the Eagles linebackers has also been scrutinized a lot this season.  But recently the two young guys, Casey Matthews and Brian Rolle have been showing signs of promise.

Lastly, Kurt Coleman completely shut down Plaxico Burress in the birds most recent win against the Jets, denying him of a crucial pass when the game was close.

If this defense can keep playing with such high intensity, I don't see any team in the NFL having success against them.

No. 4: Players Will Play for Andy Reid's Job

7 of 10

There is no doubting the love the players have for their head coach Andy Reid.  Time after time, fans have been claiming Andy has to go.  But it is the players who constantly have his back.

Reid is the one who took a chance on Michael Vick, and it looks like his service as an Eagle has been paying off.

Reid catches a lot of flack in this town for his classic, monotone post-game interviews where he starts every interview with the injury report, followed by the classic line, "time's yours."

Reid is in his 13th season as head coach of the Eagles, and with as talented of a team he has this season, there is no reason he shouldn't lead this team to the playoffs.  Now, the Eagles seem to be in their groove, so they are hoping for some help from other teams.

No. 3: Hot Teams Do Well in the Playoffs

8 of 10

Just like in any sport, the teams that end the regular season hot, are usually the teams that make noise in the playoffs.  Take the most recent St. Louis Cardinals, for example.  They barely snuck into the MLB playoffs this year and ended up beating the best team in the National League, ironically the Philadelphia Phillies, and won the World Series.

Back to football, last year the Green Bay Packers made the playoffs as a wild card team.  They beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round, and then soared through the playoffs advancing to the Super Bowl.  They ended up winning the Super Bowl last year, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25.

Also, the Packers had to win their last two games to make the playoffs and ironically, so do the Eagles this year.  Will it happen?  I guess the Eagles faithful will have to wait and see.

But one thing can be sure.  If the Eagles can play the constant football they have been playing recently, teams better watch out come playoff time.

No. 2: LeSean McCoy Is Unstoppable

9 of 10

Where do I start with LeSean McCoy, the fleet-footed running back?  The 23-year-old out of Pittsburgh has been causing havoc in the NFL all season.  Whether it's running the ball or catching it, McCoy just simply can not be stopped.

If you're one of those fans who holds their breath every time he runs with the ball not securely tucked away, teasing defenders to strip it from him, well now you can finally breathe.

To date, Shady has rushed for 1,172 yards and has 310 receiving yards.  In the Eagles most recent win over the Jets, McCoy passed Steve Van Buren for the most rushing touchdowns (17) and most total touchdowns (20) in a single season as a Philadelphia Eagle.

Part of McCoy's success can also be credited to the Birds offensive line.  Todd Herremans has finally lived up to his potential.  Also, the offensive line is doing a better job in protecting Vick, allowing zero sacks in their victory over the Jets.

Also, McCoy's blocking has improved tremendously this season.  This gives Vick that extra half-second to look for his open receivers.

McCoy isn't the only weapon the Eagles have as of late, tight end Brent Celek has been on fire this season.  He had a career high 156 yards against the Jets.  He also has 49 receptions and 517 total yards this season.  He has become a friendly target for Vick.  Look for Celek to be the difference maker in the next two games.

The return of Mike Vick has also boosted McCoy's performance.  Now teams have to focus and contain both Vick and McCoy, so in essence, they are picking their poison.

No. 1: Mike Vick Is the Leader This Team Needs

10 of 10

Some Philadelphians opposed the signing of Michael Vick, but I think it's safe to say that all those who opposed then certainly favor Vick today.

No one in the league has spent more time getting hit and avoiding getting hit this year than Vick.  Certainly, no one has spent more time on the ground than he has, either.  He continues to prove not only his physical toughness but also his mental toughness week in and week out.

So many teams are concerned with Vick as a runner, but they keep forgetting that has become quite the elite passer also.  He has thrown for 2,401 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.  Also, Vick has rushed for 544 yards, proving he is dedicated to pass first, run second.

In the locker room and on the field, Vick motivates his teammates to play at the top of their game every play.  Vick never takes any plays off and is constantly being the captain of the Birds.

Can the Eagles really make the playoffs?  Is their late-season surge too late?  Can Vick stay healthy the next two weeks?

Of course these are all valid questions to ask.  However if they can get a little help from some other teams, keep playing shut down defense and keep finding ways to get McCoy the ball, I don't see any reason why the Eagles will not only win the NFC East, but also will win Super Bowl XLVI.
