2012 NFL Mock Draft: Advice for Fixing League's Worst Offenses

Chris TrapassoNov 28, 2011

Watching the offenses of the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and St. Louis Rams makes me cringe.

The Browns scored their first opening-quarter touchdown of the season this week in their loss to the Bengals.

The only team scoring less than the Rams' 12.7 points per game are the Peyton Manning-less Colts.

Blaine Gabbert may be a decent starter in the future, but he has a paltry 62.2 QB rating this season.

These teams can drastically improve their offenses through the draft, and the following is the advice I'd give their GM's, presidents and scouting departments.

Anyone have Mike Holmgren's phone number?

Cleveland Browns

Although the Browns have allowed 27 sacks this season, the offensive line isn't their biggest problem.

Colt McCoy hasn't made strides in his second season as the starter, and a lot of that has to do with the lack of weapons around him.

First off, the Peyton Hillis situation has been a total disaster this season, and I wouldn't have a problem with the Browns releasing him.

So, with that, they need a young runner that isn't going to be be complaining about his contract and can take pressure of McCoy.

I'm thinking Trent Richardson.

More importantly, they need more threatening wideouts. Greg Little, Mohamed Massaquoi and Jordan Norwood aren't scaring any secondaries.

If Justin Blackmon or Alshon Jeffery are available, they should definitely be considered.

With talent around him, I believe McCoy can become a serviceable quarterback.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars have their QB of the future in Blaine Gabbert, right?

Gabbert has been one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league this year, but like McCoy, he doesn't have much in terms of pass-catching options.

Not every signal caller can be as effective as Cam Newton and Andy Dalton in his first season.

If the Jaguars are ready to fully commit to Gabbert, they'll have to add a receiver.

With Marcedes Lewis and Maurice Jones-Drew, they aren't far from giving their young quarterback what he needs to be successful.

Also, they've allowed 32 sacks this season, so if Blackmon or Jeffery aren't available and they don't like Michael Floyd, adding the best available offensive lineman would certainly be a step in the right direction.

St. Louis Rams

3 of 4

Rams quarterbacks have been sacked a whopping 39 times in 2011.

No wonder they're the 31st-ranked scoring defense in the league.

Sam Bradford has certainly regressed as a passer, but he's not going to get any better without time in the pocket.

Tackle Roger Saffold was having a disappointing sophomore campaign before he was recently placed on IR with a torn pectoral.

They'll likely pick in the Top 5, and a solid tackle prospect like Matt Kalil would make perfect sense.

However, if they hold the No. 2 overall selection, do they add a promising big-play threat like Alshon Jeffery or go with the top O-lineman?

With a few receivers to complement Brandon Lloyd and Danario Alexander, the Rams could begin the journey back to relevance in the NFC.
