Green Bay Packers: History Says They Won't Win Super Bowl

Matt LechnerNov 20, 2011

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-26 on Sunday. The Packers are now 10-0 and are the sixth team since 2000 to start the season with 10 straight wins.

While the Packers are the clear favorites to win the Super Bowl this year, if history is any indication, they will not be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February.

Of the five teams to start the season 10-0 since 2000, only one has gone onto win the Super Bowl.

2005 Indianapolis Colts

The Colts started the 2005 season 13-0 and finished the regular season 14-2.

Their two losses came against the San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks. The Colts earned a first-round bye in the playoffs but were upset by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Divisional game.

During that playoff game, Peyton Manning engineered two fourth quarter touchdown drives, but it wasn't enough as the Steelers ended the Colts season, 21-18.

2007 New England Patriots

After steamrolling through the regular season undefeated, the Patriots' march toward NFL history was halted by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

The record-breaking Patriots were 35 seconds away from joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the only undefeated teams in NFL history, but an Eli Manning pass to Plaxico Burress in the corner of the end zone quickly turned the Patriots' dream season into a nightmare.

2008 Tennessee Titans

Led by quarterback Kerry Collins, the Titans raced off to a surprising 10-0 start. However, after 10 straight wins the Titans lost three of their final six games to finish the regular season 13-3.

Tennessee locked up home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, but were eliminated by the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional playoff game.

2009 Indianapolis Colts

The Colts won a lot of close games to start the 2009 season 10-0. They got off to a 14-0 start before losing their final two regular season games. Many believe Indianapolis could have made a run at an unbeaten season, but the Colts decided to rest several starters in the final two games to prepare for the playoffs.

The Colts cruised through the playoffs as the AFC's top seed, but ultimately lost to the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV.

2009 New Orleans Saints

The Saints' high-powered offense scored 24 points or more in each of their first 10 games en route to a 10-0 start.

The Saints would start 13-0 before suffering their first loss of the season in Week 15 to the Dallas Cowboys.

In fact, the Saints would lose their final three regular season games to finish the season 13-3. That record was still good enough to give the Saints home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Saints used the Superdome crowd to their advantage and advanced to Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Saints won that game 31-17 and became the only team since 2000 to start the season 10-0 and finish the season with a Super Bowl victory.

Are the Packers next?
