MLB Trade Rumors: Nightmare Scenarios for All 30 Teams at the Deadline
At the MLB trade deadline, there is a lot of uncertainty. Things could go different ways for different teams. Some could see their dream scenarios unfold, while others may end up making costly mistakes.
MLB teams will make rash judgments based on winning or losing streaks before the trade deadline that may end up impacting them both during the current season and in the future.
Arizona Diamondbacks: Trading Justin Upton
1 of 30Upton has drawn a lot of attention from teams this season. It was said that at least 15 teams approached the Diamondbacks about Upton during the winter meetings this year.
At age 23, Upton is one of the best young players in the game. The Diamondbacks would be making a huge mistake if they traded Upton, even if they got an outstanding package in return.
Atlanta Braves: Not Acquring an Outfielder
2 of 30The Braves currently have Jordan Schafer and Nate McLouth in their outfield. They are certainly in a position to make the playoffs this year, but having these two outfielders starting will hurt them.
Schafer is batting just .230 on the year with an on-base percentage under .300. McLouth is not doing much better, as he is hitting .232 with a .345 on-base percentage.
Baltimore Orioles: Failing To Pick Up Prospects at the Deadline
3 of 30The Orioles are a team that is building for the future. They have a few players who they can move at the trade deadline so that they can pick up prospects.
Kevin Gregg is having a good season and likely won't be around when the Orioles are ready to be competitive. Teams overpay for closers and the Orioles could get a few solid prospects for Gregg.
Boston Red Sox: Overpay for a Shortstop
4 of 30The Red Sox have struggled to find a good starting shortstop since Nomar Garciaparra was traded. They could look for a shortstop at this year's trade deadline.
However, the Red Sox may end up overpaying for a shortstop and moving players that could be helpful in the next few years.
Chicago Cubs: Turn Down a Deal That Would Rid Them of Carlos Zambrano
5 of 30The Cubs and Zambrano have had their fair share of issues. Zambrano also has a big contract that he is not living up to.
There is a chance that it this year's trade deadline that the Cubs may be able to get rid of Zambrano in a salary dump. They should take advantage of this opportunity if it is presented to them.
Chicago White Sox: Not Upgrading Their Roster for the Playoff Push
6 of 30The White Sox are in the middle of a close race in the AL Central. They are only slightly behind the Tigers and the surprising Indians.
If Adam Dunn's production turns around, the White Sox will be in contention until the end of the year. Picking up one more key player could push them over the top.
Cincinnati Reds: Failing To Address Their Starting Rotation
7 of 30Almost every team could use an upgrade in their rotation. This is especially true for the Reds. They have one of the best bullpens in the league, but the ERA of their starting rotation is 4.56, which is 27th in the MLB.
The Reds have a few prospects in the minors that they could move to upgrade their rotation. If they believe that they can be a playoff team, they need to make a move.
Cleveland Indians: Not Finding a Starting Pitcher
8 of 30Fausto Carmona was supposed to be a big part of the Indians rotation this year. Unfortunately for them, he has struggled mightily on the year.
The Indians are in a position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Acquiring a starter will push them in the right direction.
Colorado Rockies: Not Getting a Starter To Replace Aaron Cook
9 of 30The Rockies have already brought up Juan Nicasio to help with the back end of their rotation. They should also look for someone to replace Aaron Cook.
In the five starts he has made this year, Cook has a 4.66 ERA. He also is not a player that plans to figure into the Rockies rotation.
Detroit Tigers: Failing To Shore Up the Back End of Their Rotation
10 of 30The Tigers are one of the teams in the AL Central that are in the race for the division title. However, they need to improve the back end of their rotation.
Phil Coke was moved from the rotation to the bullpen and was replaced by Charlie Furbush. He put up good numbers in the minors, but it is uncertain how he will fare as a major league starter.
Florida Marlins: Not Getting Prospects To Help for the Future
11 of 30The Marlins have no shot of contending this season. They are deep in last place in the NL East.
Florida has a chance to have a fire sale and work towards the future. The Marlins have done it before with great results. They could move Hanley Ramirez and get a big return.
Houston Astros: Failing To Build for the Future
12 of 30Just like the Marlins, the Astros are another team that are not going anywhere this season, and possibly even next year.
Michael Bourn is a player that will be in high demand at the trade deadline. So will Wandy Rodriguez. The Astros should trade at least one of these to bring back players who can help them in the future.
Kansas City Royals: Trading Away Any Top Prospects
13 of 30The Royals have done a great job developing their prospects and it has shown this year. The team may be struggling, but the Royals young talent has been good.
There is no need for the Royals to trade away any prospects to bring in veteran players. It would be a huge mistake if the Royals moved some of their top prospects.
Los Angeles Angels: Trading Mike Trout
14 of 30Trout is the No. 2 prospect in baseball. There are very few players that he would be worth moving to acquire. One of them, Jose Reyes, is no longer going to be on the market.
The only player who might make sense for the Angels to trade Trout for is Hanley Ramirez. However, there are also doubts about if that would be worth it.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Having the McCourt Situation Force Them To Move Big Names
15 of 30Frank McCourt's financial problems may greatly impact the Dodgers at the trade deadline. The team has a payroll of almost $120 million that he can barely pay.
McCourt might move some Dodgers that have big contracts. Andre Either or Chad Billingsley could be players that are moved because McCourt simply can't afford to pay them.
Milwaukee Brewers: Not Replacing Yuniesky Betancourt
16 of 30Betancourt has struggled for the Brewers this year. Many people wondered why they would take him in the deal for Zach Grienke.
The Brewers are in the middle of a fierce competition for the NL Central crown. They will be doing themselves a big favor if they replaced Betancourt.
Minnesota Twins: Holding on to Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer
17 of 30The Twins have had a down year, but they figure to be competitive again next season. However, this year is already lost.
Minnesota has two players that they could move to bring in players who can help next year. Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer can bring the Twins a few nice prospects.
New York Mets: Trading Jose Reyes
18 of 30The Mets are in the Wild Card race this year due in large part to Reyes. He is having an MVP-like year.
Besides Reyes' talent, there is another reason that the team needs to keep him: The fans love Reyes. Many Mets fans hate the ownership, and it would only anger them further if Reyes is moved.
New York Yankees: Failing To Capitalize on Jesus Montero's Value
19 of 30Recently, there have been questions surrounding how good of an MLB player Jesus Montero will actually be. He has been falling down the Yankees' catching depth chart.
Montero may not be anything more than a DH in the majors, but he still has a high value. The Yankees should move him now for a player who could help them reach yet another World Series.
Oakland Athletics: Trading Away One of Their Top Three Starters
20 of 30Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson and Gio Gonzalez will all be key to the Athletics future. Billy Beane knows what he is doing when he makes deals, but these guys should not be moved.
The A's could get a big package for any of these guys. However, Oakland should hold on to what could be their new big three.
Philadelphia Phillies: Failing To Upgrade Thier Outfield
21 of 30The Phillies currently have both Dominic Brown and Raul Ibanez in their outfield. Brown is a great prospect but he has struggled. Ibanez has struggled with the bat and is one of the worst defensive outfielders in baseball.
Philadelphia will have many opportunities to upgrade their outfield at the deadline. It would be a big mistake if they don't.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Trading Away Prospects To Compete This Year
22 of 30The Pirates are having one of their best seasons in a long time. They might be tempted to trade away some prospects so that they can make a run at the NL Central this year.
Doing so would be a mistake for the Pirates. The Pirates' time appears to be coming, but it is not here yet. They should hold on to the youngsters for the near future.
San Deigo Padres: Holding on to Heath Bell
23 of 30This may not seem like a nightmare scenario, but teams are willing to pay a lot for closers. The Padres could bring in some great young prospects to help them in the future.
Mike Adams could also step into the closer's role next season in Bell's place.
San Francisco Giants: Not Acquiring a Starting Catcher
24 of 30Eli Whiteside is not qualified to be a starting catcher in the major leagues. He is hitting just .219 on the year.
Replacing Buster Posey will not be easy, but it must be done. Posey will likely move to first base next season so the Giants should look for someone who can catch for the next few years.
Seattle Mariners: Trading Felix Hernandez
25 of 30Felix Hernandez has been linked to a few other teams. He has said that he does not want to go anywhere and has a partial no-trade clause.
There have been offers made for Hernandez before and there will certainly be offers made for him again. The Mariners should hold on to him unless they are absolutely blown away with a deal.
St. Louis Cardinals: Bringing in an Expensive Player with Years Left on His Deal
26 of 30The Cardinals obviously want to make the playoffs this season and are in a position to do it. However, they have much bigger concerns.
Re-signing Albert Pujols this offseason is the team's top priority, possibly even more so than making the playoffs this year. Bringing in a player with money left on his deal following this season means that there is less money for Pujols.
Tampa Bay Rays: Not Improving the Bullpen
27 of 30The Rays always have a tough task in competing with the the Yankees and Red Sox. They have done a very good job with it the past few years.
Tampa Bay could certainly benefit from bringing in another reliever. The Rays have the 16th-best bullpen ERA in the majors. Trading for someone like Heath Bell would help the Rays with the playoff push.
Texas Rangers: Failing To Address the Bullpen
28 of 30It seems as if almost every team could use some bullpen help. The Rangers are definitely one of those teams.
The Rangers bullpen ERA is 4.56, which is third-worst in the American League. Neftali Feliz has had some struggles this year. Texas can certainly benefit by bringing in at least one reliever.
Toronto Blue Jays: Trading Brandon Morrow
29 of 30Morrow has struggled a bit this year, but he still has a lot of trade value. There will be a lot of teams in playoff contention looking for a starter.
However, Morrow should be a player that is a big piece of the Blue Jays' future. He has the potential to be a top of the rotation starter.
Washington Nationals: Trading Away Young Players and Prospects
30 of 30The Nationals appear to have one of the brightest futures of any team in the MLB. Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg look like they will be stars.
Washington will be competitive in the next year or two. They have other good young players either in the majors or in their farm system. They should hold on to them until they are ready to compete.
