Russell Westbrook Retires from NBA in Video Narrated by Michael B. Jordan

After spending the 2025-26 season with the rebuilding Sacramento Kings, veteran point guard Russell Westbrook has decided to call it a career.

With the help of a video narrated by Michael B. Jordan, Westbrook announced his retirement from the NBA after 18 seasons in the league.

The Kings were his seventh team, as he also suited up for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets.

Sacramento tied the Utah Jazz for the worst record in the Western Conference last season at 22-60. It was the most losses Westbrook has experienced in his career, surpassing the 23-59 campaign for the Thunder during his rookie season in 2008-09.

Despite the lack of team success, Westbrook remained a steady veteran presence for the Kings. He played 64 games with 58 starts and averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and team highs of 6.7 assists and 1.3 steals. He missed Sacramento's final 11 games after suffering a toe injury.

The 2025-26 campaign wasn't all bad for Westbrook. The 37-year-old moved into fifth place on the NBA's all-time assists list after passing legends Steve Nash and Mark Jackson. He also became the first guard in NBA history to surpass 9,000 career rebounds. The NBA's all-time triple-doubles leader recorded six more this season to bring his career total to 209.

Westbrook didn't win an NBA championship, but he established himself as one of the best players of his generation during his legendary career. He was the 2017 NBA MVP, a nine-time All-Star and a two-time scoring champion. He earned nine All-NBA selections and led the league in assists three times.

Westbrook ends his career with 27,176 points, 9,025 rebounds and 10,351 assists. He and LeBron James are the only players to record over 25,000 points and 10,000 assists in NBA history.

Now, Westbrook will have the chance to enjoy retirement and enjoy the next chapter of his life while he awaits his call to the Hall of Fame in a few years.
