Suns HC Rumors: Kevin McHale, James Borrego, Igor Kokoskov Among Candidates
Former Houston Rockets head coach Kevin McHale, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach James Borrego and Utah Jazz assistant coach Igor Kokoskov are reportedly candidates for the Phoenix Suns' vacant head coaching job, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 in Phoenix.
Gambadoro reported Friday the Suns will interview Kokoskov.
Phoenix fired Earl Watson after an 0-3 start this season, and Jay Triano went 21-58 on an interim basis over the rest of the campaign.
At 21-61, the Suns finished with the NBA's worst mark in 2017-18.
McHale, a Hall of Fame player who spent 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics and won three NBA titles, has seven seasons of head coaching experience to his credit with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Rockets.
The 60-year-old boasts a 232-185 record and led the Rockets to the Western Conference Finals in 2014-15.
Houston fired McHale the following season after a 4-7 start.
Borrego, 40, has been an assistant coach for San Antonio since 2015. His NBA coaching career began with the Spurs in 2003, and he left the organization in 2010 for stints with the New Orleans Hornets and Orlando Magic before returning.
His only head coaching experience came on an interim basis with the Magic in 2014-15. He went 10-20 in a 30-game trial.
Kokoskov, a longtime NBA assistant, has enjoyed stints with the Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Magic and Jazz.
Kokoskov won an NBA championship as an assistant with the Pistons in 2004.
The 46-year-old has been a head coach internationally for the Georgian and Slovenian national teams, and he led Slovenia to a gold medal in the 2017 EuroBasket tournament.
Whoever lands the head coaching job in Phoenix will aim to lead the Suns to the playoffs for the first time since 2009-10.
