LeBron James Reportedly Hasn't Discussed Joining Warriors
Pump the breaks on the "LeBron James to Golden State" chatter.
Citing a source close to the three-time champion, Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon wrote James "has had no discussions with anyone close to him about joining the Warriors or any other team."
On Thursday, ESPN.com's Chris Haynes reported the Warriors "could position themselves to secure a meeting" with James in free agency this summer if they are able to open up a max salary slot.
However, Haynes noted there is "no indication" the Warriors are seriously considering making a run at James.
James told Tom Withers of the Associated Press he was focused on nothing but making the Cavaliers better and was disappointed the reports were out there.
James owns a $35.6 million player option for the 2018-19 season but can become an unrestricted free agent by declining it.
If LeBron makes that move—which is "expected," according to Haynes—teams will line up to try to get a sit-down with him.
The other contenders for James' services likely won't be established until after the playoffs conclude, but Haynes told 710 ESPN Los Angeles' Jorge Sedano on Thursday that the Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat would all be in line for face-to-face meetings because the four-time MVP respects them.
Haynes also said James "wouldn't rule out" the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets or his current employer, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Asked what he thought about rumblings that James is already considering Golden State, Warriors forward Kevin Durant didn't mince words.
"Bulls--t," he told reporters on Thursday. "In this league, just like a couple years ago, me coming here, nobody would have thought that. It's part of me as a basketball player that's just like, 'Let's just worry about basketball.' Then on the other side, we know this is a business as well."
