Spurs vs. Thunder: Score, Highlights, Reaction from 2017 Regular Season
The Oklahoma City Thunder (36-29) halted their four-game losing skid Thursday night with a convincing 102-92 win over the San Antonio Spurs (50-14) at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Russell Westbrook recorded his league-leading 31st triple-double with 23 points, 13 assists and 13 rebounds as OKC put the clamps on San Antonio.
Westbrook is now tied with Wilt Chamberlain for the second-most triple-doubles in a single season, per the NBA on Twitter:
The triple-double also represented Westbrook's first versus the Spurs. According to ESPN Stats & Info, the only two teams he hasn't recorded a triple-double against are the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets.
A night after the Spurs were thoroughly outplayed by the Sacramento Kings in the first half, they came out relatively flat against the Thunder.
Oklahoma City had no problem picking its spots throughout the opening 24 minutes, with Westbrook leading the charge flanked by a slew of steady complementary contributors.
Chief among them was Domantas Sabonis. Although the rookie came off the bench in favor of Taj Gibson, Sabonis made his presence felt and dropped jaws when he put Dewayne Dedmon on a poster with a vicious one-handed slam:
With Sabonis, Steven Adams (11 points, six rebounds) and Enes Kanter (14 points, 10 rebounds) all active, the Thunder proceeded to score 56 points on 50 percent shooting through two quarters.
Victor Oladipo also answered the bell with the Thunder in need of another perimeter scorer to put pressure on San Antonio's defense.
Westbrook's running mate finished with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting (3-of-4 from three), and he went on a personal 8-0 run in the third quarter to help push the Thunder's lead to 11 entering the fourth, as the NBA on TNT documented:
At that point, the Spurs were cooked.
Although Kawhi Leonard (19 points), Pau Gasol (18 points) and LaMarcus Aldridge (17 points) all found moderate success, the Spurs lacked the defensive intensity and offensive discipline (14 turnovers) necessary to take down OKC's dialed-in attack.
As a result, San Antonio sputtered to its first loss since Feb. 12.
The Spurs now sit two games back of the Golden State Warriors and the Western Conference's No. 1 overall seed. If there's good news, though, it's that they'll have a chance to cut into that number on Saturday when the two sides meet at AT&T Center.
The Thunder, meanwhile, will try to use Thursday's win as a springboard to more success when they host the Utah Jazz on Saturday evening before embarking on a two-game road trip that will feature matchups against the Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors.
Postgame Reaction
After the win, Westbrook spoke to TNT's David Aldridge about how the Thunder were able to fend off one of the West's best:
Elsewhere, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich credited the Thunder for being the more tenacious side, as the San Antonio Express-News' Jabari Young documented:
Aldridge later provided an update regarding Leonard's status after he was absent down the stretch:
Aldridge added that there's "no word yet" on Leonard's availability for Saturday evening's showdown with the Warriors.
