Frank Vogel, Pacers Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Reaction, Analysis

Mike ChiariOct 8, 2014

With Frank Vogel entering the final year of his contract, the Indiana Pacers agreed to an extension with the 41-year-old head coach on Wednesday.

It is a multiyear deal, according to the team's official Twitter account, although specific terms have not yet been disclosed:

Vogel has been the Pacers head coach since taking over for Jim O'Brien in January 2011, and he has led Indiana to the playoffs in each of his four seasons at the helm. He has also taken the Pacers to the Eastern Conference Finals in each of the past two years before falling to the Miami Heat.

It was a struggle for the Pacers to reach that point last season despite going 56-26 during the regular season, and it led to speculation that Vogel's job was potentially in danger.

As David Benner of Pacers.com pointed out, however, Vogel has seemingly been entrenched all along:

Among those who are thrilled with the extension is Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird.

"We're very happy to extend Frank's contract," Bird said in a statement on the official team website. "I believe he has done a great job, and I look forward to continuing our relationship and working together to achieve all of our goals."

Vogel is content with the new pact as well, and he is very much focused on the future now that contract questions are no longer hanging over his head.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to continue my tenure as Pacers' coach," Vogel said in the statement on the team website. "It's an honor to represent this franchise and lead this team. I look forward to the challenge ahead. I'm grateful to have had good, coachable teams along with coaching staffs that have been second to none."

Vogel has done well to make the Pacers contenders in the Eastern Conference over the past couple of years, but returning to the Eastern Conference Finals for a third consecutive season will be more challenging than ever.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are the clear-cut favorites with LeBron James and Kevin Love now in the fold while the Chicago Bulls aren't far behind with a healthy Derrick Rose and the acquisition of Pau Gasol.

As for the Pacers, guard Lance Stephenson spurned Indiana during free agency in favor of the Charlotte Hornets while superstar guard Paul George is potentially out for the entire season due to a leg injury suffered over the summer during a Team USA scrimmage.

Although the Pacers still have talentDavid West and Roy Hibbert, most notablythe 2014-15 campaign is shaping up to be an uphill climb. If Vogel is able to keep the team in contention, he will certainly have earned this vote of confidence.
